keep an eye on it! this isn't the rule in LA city council, but it's the practice. we currently have a conservative "Democrat" (former Republican) who's spent her entire term blocking affordable housing set in motion by her progressive predecessor and our mayor is just *shrug*

one of mine is to get people to realize they agree on more than they disagree and they should all chill a little

Sam, I think Nithya is more a bellwether than an exception, and I spend a lot of time in both DSA and YIMBY spaces in LA

I know I told you this is another thread, but same in LA! the bill CA passed that legalizes building more apartments near transit? 3 of the 5 votes in city council to support it were DSA, and we only have 4 DSA members on council

we have a lot of that in LA, too. I feel like the folks who care about renter protections somehow end up with the NIMBY label more than the wealthy homeowners who file lawsuits based on "shadows," maybe just because our expectations for them are so low in the first place

the vast majority of DSA-types I've worked with are MUCH more YIMBY than anyone (including sometimes they themselves) realizes. progressives, on the whole, are good-hearted people who believe housing is a human right. just takes awhile sometimes to figure out how we get there.

Left YIMBY: build anything, especially social housing; protect renters
Left NIMBY: build only social housing; protect renters; developers shouldn’t make a profit
Right YIMBY: build only market rate housing. Property rights
Right NIMBY: build only luxury single family; density and cities are scary

in LA, I've seen a lot of alignment, I think you have to spend time in both spaces to notice (which I do), or watch city council closely on certain votes. there's increasingly a really encouraging overlap

I feel like I need to do more IRL activism, not just for its own sake, but because I need reminders that normal humans who want better things exist out there, and hearing extremely online miserable NIMBY fucks like her represent leftism probably unjustly sours me on so much of it
