"It could just be that Keir used his best bargaining chip long ago when he offered the president a state visit on the first date. That’s the only thing The Donald has ever really wanted from us. We gave it away too cheaply." Many a true word's spoken in jest www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

As far as I can understand, Kyle's argument against re-joining the CU is that it would take time. He says his goal is improved growth, but refuses to improve access to the EU market. That's nuts. He seems to think scrapping directors reports will have an impact on growth. That's nuts too

In the past one of the biggest attractions of investing in the UK was the access that gave to a huge market: the EU (and the opportunity to influence the rules and regs the EU set). All gone, thanks to Brexit.

2️⃣ He said it, but you misunderstood him.
3️⃣ He said what you understood, but he was just trolling.
4️⃣ He was serious but he's just negotiating, not going to do it.
5️⃣ He's going to do it for grand strategy reasons I've invented.
6️⃣ Look what you liberals made him do.

I understand that Mandelson was until recently UK ambassador to the US, so his viewed are important - but he has provided plenty of evidence that his judgement is poor, or worse. There are many others with great experience who could have been asked to give their assessment of the situation
Radio 4 had Lord Gove on Start the Week this morning, and Lord Mandelson for lunchtime's #wato. Presumably, Evan Davis' special guest at 5 on #bbcpm will be Beezlebub, Lord of the Flies.

Lawyerly no doubt, all emotion careful drained to leave "pragmatic" argument. But politics, and even more statesmanship, requires more: courage, leadership, and unswerving adherence to principles for a start

"Tony Blair should come back as foreign secretary." An off the wall idea, but disliked and distrusted as Blair is (deservedly) it has its merits, not least freeing Starmer to concentrate on domestic matters. The return of Gordon Brown would be welcome, and Miliband too
