The only unknowns in the whole equation are exactly who will fall through the cracks, and where they will find shelter when it happens.

But the system guarantees this catastrophe will be inflicted on thousands of people.

Excellent writeup, Lanrick! Our government policies guarantee encampments will exist. Market rent is far above minimum wage. And far above what people receive for unemployment, disability, etc. Affordable housing wait is > 10 years. And shelters run at 100% capacity.

That our prime minister can't condemn or take action against a genocidal settler colonial state because Canada is a genocidal settler colonial state.

Fascinating. The points illustrated in that article overlap with the points on the face used to stimulate the vagus nerve.

There's been some indication that dysautonomia and other Covid complications are related to damage to the vagus nerve.

This article quotes life insurers in India. That doesn't rule out something similar happening in North America. But it's a very different population, and very different insurance market.

I know this Bloor to Dupont stretch of Bathurst. It’s full of emerging businesses who’d benefit from pedestrian, cyclist and transit traffic more than a few parking spots!

This study doesn't appear to make any attempt to distinguish between learning loss due to remote schooling vs the other effects of the pandemic. For example over 250,000 US kids lost a primary caregiver due to Covid.

I agree with the need to learn from our mistakes and study the successes.

If the Summerhill Market owners had simply stated their business concerns, that would be a good faith sharing of an opinion. What they did was hide behind a manufactured "grass roots movement" to try to drive a false narrative, presumably because they feared their motive wasn't sympathetic enough.

I read Genocide Bad by @simkern.bsky.social recently, and am now in the middle of One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El-Akkad.

I highly recommend reading them together - they complement each other so well.

I think the other thing people underestimate is how often seniors and kids are driven short distances within neighbourhood. Safe bike infra means more independence and fewer parents driving kids to school/friends/lessons/park etc.

So the residents ran across the street to alert the fire station, but by then two tents were fully involved. Why not let people have safety gear? Why not let them with with as much safety and dignity as possible until there is REAL HOUSING for them?
