Our #seaice team has developed a Sea Ice Index, online since several years, at osisaf-hl.met.no/v2p2-sea-ice.... It offers visuals of the trends and evolution of sea ice at hemispheric, global and regional scales. It includes the sea-ice extent and area since 1978, and is continuously updated.

Our Q3 2025 Global Weather video is here! 🌍

See how major weather events looked from space in Jul–Sept, with storms coloured from light yellow - deep red by intensity.

As always, its thanks to our partners we get these stunning global views. Watch the planet’s weather in motion:

The oceanographic Chinese satellite #HY-2C allowed us to retrieved wind around #Melissa yesterday, while the hurricane was raging over #Jamaïca.
The maximum winds retrieved around the hurricane range between 80km/h and 90km/h.

An interesting story about the links between #clouds and #SeaSurfaceTemperature, by our colleagues from the #CMSAF :
DYK the clouds above our oceans play a role in understanding climate? ☁️

Marine stratocumulus clouds, which reflect sunlight & help cool the oceans, are shrinking as sea temperatures rise.

Fewer clouds mean warmer oceans - learn how satellites can help track this critical change: bit.ly/497OPPZ

Satellite data confirm that global warming accelerates as marine clouds break up due to ocean warming 🌊. Research by Abhay Devasthale & Karl-Göran Karlsson (SMHI) and @rroebeling.bsky.social, 👀 read it here bit.ly/3VVecwE #earthobservation #remotesensing

Looking forward to produce Sea Surface Temperature products from METimage data!
What better way to celebrate #WSW2025 than with the first images from METimage on the newly launched Metop-SGA1 satellite! 🤩

The images capture clouds, storms and Earth’s surface across Europe, North Africa, and beyond in stunning detail.

This animation stitches images from 25–27 Sept 2025. Cont.🧵

Cyclones #Humberto and #Imelda are developing in the Atlantic off the US coast. These two nearby low-pressure systems are interacting and will merge, in the rare Fujiwara effect.
Last night, #HY-2C captured the two systems in a single swath, allowing our team at @knmi.nl to retrieved the wind.
