I should have posted this yesterday for World AIDS Day but better late than never. This is Gary McGrath, I did my honours history thesis on the work he did to set up the world's first national needle exchange in NZ in the late 80s. Gary had been living in Melbourne prior to his diagnosis in 1984.
Americans please trust it could be FAR worse. It is OVER for us in New Zealand if our Prime Minister Luxon finds out he can impose his choice of font on the nation. Yes that's blue comic sans #nzpol

Splurged and brought clearance wallpaper to redo my windowless hallway. I HATE my current colour. It's eggshell blue and shows every bit of grime and just looks cold and gross. Only enough paper for half the wall so will paint the top half with something peachy 🍑

OK not going to go into specifics but if you or your kids or anyone else you know works around machinery, especially anything to do with conveyer belts, DO NOT WEAR HOODIES. My partner does a lot of safety stuff and there have been too many near misses he's been called in after the fact to prevent.

"Art is supposed to make you feel something." Mission accomplished. I guess. Not sure what these feelings are. There's a chance this is an entirely new emotion I'm feeling.

Shout out to my legend of a rural delivery driver who dropped off two body board sized parcels and sent us a text saying we might want to come check the mail before the kids walked past them on the way to school 🫡

Bit pooped today but I put on a cute dress and dragged myself out of the house to post my #secretsantaaonz gift. Was feeling pretty cute and organised until the universe humbled me and flicked a stone into my windshield and cracked it to a "drive home and don't drive again until it's replaced" level

My 11yo son has a coldsore on the side of his lip. I've never dealt with one before or known anyone who has (who discussed it with/around me) or come across this on mum social media. What do I do? I'm assuming it's not a doctor/nurse thing. Is over the counter stuff from the pharmacy OK for kids?

like, what job do nz media reporters even do these days? because it mostly seems to be "refuse to look at the evidence" and "reprint anything ACT or NZF says verbatim and without challenge"

My wife has been HIV+ for 34 years. She’s alive today b/c work of activists who destigmatized the virus, pushed medical science to adapt & find ways to treat it, & advocated for gov health programs that helped fund her care. The current U.S. regime may want to go back in time, but we won’t let them.

1/ Quick thread for world AIDS day. I don’t know why this memory didn’t come back until now.

My parents divorced in 1978, and my mother found herself a 38 year old single parent of a 2 and a 6 year old. She was a college graduate, but didn’t really have any career prospects.

I would love to see a longread on universities paying huge sums to consultancies for work their own faculty could easily do at far lower costs

These fees drive up the cost of tuition, reduce internal resources for research funding, and honestly are demoralizing to the bright minds employed by unis
