Turning back to VR for a moment, I appreciate this smart framing of Meta’s headsets—that even if you don’t see ads when you turn them on they should still be considered ad-driven devices, since that’s ultimately what’s paying for all of it (Ali Bar-Zeev interviewed by Gabriele Romagnoli)

Cute, but unless these other countries are willing to spend as much as the US on science, the brain drain will be to other professions (some completely unrelated to science).
Trump brain drain starts global tug-of-war for the best science minds
Some of America’s brightest are increasingly uncomfortable in a country where ideology threatens to constrain science

"Marathon" isn't a good metaphor, because marathons are a slog to be endured, and also, marathons end, whereas this is... interminable. But what if, hear me out,...

It's not a marathon or a sprint. It's strength training.

One of the things I think about often is a post I read probably twenty years ago from a math professor who was out walking on his beach with this dog, throwing a ball and watching the dog run out and catch it before it landed.

I saw advice to buy extra cans of food when you’re at the grocery store to donate to the food bank.

I want to politely nudge you to give the money directly to food banks (or to mutual aid groups if you know of any).

We can usually stretch a dollar farther than a dollar’s worth of canned goods

I have just made the repo of my C++ STL replacement lib public on github. It's called Bedrock.

It's got the usual things, Vector, String, Atomic etc. but also a very good HashMap and few interesting allocators (details on blog: danglingpointers.com/post/bedrock...)
