Let’s be very clear: ICE is a rogue, secretive, and abusive agency that has been misusing courts like those at 26 Federal Plaza for its cruel agenda.

Court monitoring isn’t just important because it attempts to deliver some measure of transparency, it is also First Amendment-protected activity.

Signal’s end-to-end encryption means authorities typically can only see message content if a chat participant provides it or if they gain entry to someone’s unlocked phone.

New Yorkers deserve immediate answers about how the FBI accessed the Signal group.

It's critical that the NYPD immediately explain its role in this, which is unclear from today’s reporting.

The NYPD must also plainly reject the unacceptable political basis for this kind of investigation. New Yorkers have the right to know whose interests the department is serving.

Reporting shows that the FBI labelled peaceful court monitors as "violent extremists" - yet another sign that the FBI under Trump, Bondi, and Patel is either delusional or, more likely, willfully misusing its vast powers.

A Blackie warrant is named for the 1981 case "Blackie's House of Beef v. Castillo". It is a type of civil search warrant used in immigration enforcement. Raids that are conducted with a Blackie's warrant are often abusive, and target people based on their appearance, accent, or surname. ⁠
