“Having access to a book is a lifeline,” said Megan Porter, NYCLU staff attorney. “It’s not just having something to do to spend the time, but to also participate in what seems like a small act but connects people to feeling more human.”

While nearly every school in NY is funded through their school district, the three schools on Indigenous Nations must instead appeal to the State Education Dept for funds.

This has led to severe neglect and underfunding for Nation schools. Lawmakers must make amends.
Why is NY’s Onondaga Nation School Crumbling? - NYCLU

The Onondaga Nation has had a treaty with the U.S. since the country’s earliest days that requires the state to provide an equal education to Indigenous students living on sovereign land.

Unfortunately, the current funding structure fails to achieve that mandate.

New York drew the ire of Trump's Dept of Education when our state adopted a rule banning Native American “mascots” in public schools.

Perpetuating harmful stereotypes through school “mascots” does not pay tribute to our rich cultures. Instead, it distorts our history and fuels misinformation.

The Massapequa School District’s Chiefs mascot doesn’t honor my Native American culture, it insults it.

Today is #IndigenousPeoplesDay, a day to honor the culture, heritage, and resilience of our Native American communities.

New York has a rich indigenous legacy and history - but there’s still more work to do to achieve equity and justice for indigenous people in New York ⤵️

This ruling makes it crystal clear that any attempt to ban trans women and girls from sports is prohibited by our New York State’s antidiscrimination laws.

This isn’t rule of law - it’s retaliation.

Whether trying to silence Mahmoud Khalil or Jimmy Kimmel, trying to bend universities, law firms, and news networks, or leveling corrupt charges against NY AG James, we will not succumb to the Trump regime’s bullying and intimidation.

New York is the safest big city in the nation. We are not a training ground for the military.

There is no legal basis to send in the National Guard - not in New York City, nor Chicago, nor Portland, nor any other American city. We will not be silent.

Racism is embedded in the death penalty.

This World Against the Death Penalty Day and every other day of the year, we’re calling on our elected officials to work toward an end to capital punishment once and for all.

Abortion rights are not only crucial to our physical health, but also key to our mental well-being. No one should have to live in fear and worry over not having control over their own bodies.

On #WorldMentalHealthDay, let's advocate for the right to abortion care.

We're suing the city of Elmira over its unlawful zoning ordinance that blocked the construction of an affordable, supportive housing development for people with disabilities.

Every New Yorker deserves a safe and affordable place to live, and people with disabilities are no exception.
Aerial photo of Elimra, NY. The headline reads "We are suing Elmira, NY for blocking the construction of supportive housing for people with disabilities". Light brown text on a dark brown background. This quote is attributed to NYCLU attorney Gabriella Larios: "We are challenging Elmira, NY's unlawful zoning ordinance that blocked construction of an affordable, supportive housing development for people with disabilities. After initially supporting the project in early 2023, the city abruptly reversed its decision in late 2023 following neighborhood opposition that relied on harmful stereotypes about people with disabilities. Every New Yorker deserves a safe and affordable place to live, and people with disabilities are no exception. Yet, disability is the most common basis for housing discrimination complaints in our state. Light brown text on a dark brown background. The quote is attributed to Gabriella Larios, staff attorney: "By blocking construction of a much-needed supportive housing development, the city of Elmira and its mayor have turned their back on vulnerable members of their community. Elmira belongs to all of its residents, not just a handful of homeowners. We hope the court will strike down the discriminatory ordinance and allow the project to move forward."

Trump’s open interference in the DOJ’s investigation is a clear violation of our country’s long tradition of an independent judicial system.

This indictment makes it clearer than ever that the president has prioritized retaliation over the rule of law.

This indictment follows Trump’s direct instruction to U.S. AG Pam Bondi to bring charges against his list of perceived political enemies, and the forced resignation of a U.S. attorney who recently determined there were insufficient grounds for prosecution.

BREAKING: The U.S. Department of Justice has indicted Attorney General Letitia James, the latest in a long list of brazen abuses of power by Trump in his ongoing attempts to weaponize our nation’s judicial system to settle personal vendettas, attack his political opponents, and silence his critics.
