I have said before and will say again that it is such a loss that we no longer get covers of this caliber for fantasy books.

This art is by Jean-Léon Huens. These covers are for the Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander. They lit my imagination on fire as a kid.

This was difficult to write; if I had my druthers, it would've come out last year, but I struggled with revisiting this period of my life that intently, or with organizing things in a way that didn't feel navel-gazey or self-pitying.

But I do hope this reaches folks and helps them on their way.
When faced with a life-changing accident, Jean-Karlo turned to Hiroshi Fujioka's performance as Kamen Rider and the series' enduring story of hope.

Quarter of the way through Ryuki and I can... appreciate it but it doesn't hypnotize me like Yasuko Kobayashi usually does.

The movie was one of the purest cinematic rushes I will ever feel.
Every time it almost feels like Ryo Fujii’s Taroman leans too hard on (loving) mockery of TV Tsuburaya artifice, it flips into an Akio Jissoji riff so apt and perfect it just makes you wish something could look like this without the safety or disclaimer of parody. Some of this imagery is to die for.

8 overtimes is one thing.

Losing in seven of them. 🤣
Marner gives it away, Gauthier in front.

4-3 Ducks in overtime.

Golden Knights are 1-7 in overtime this year.

The more I think about it, the more I think there is only one way this increasingly awful sounding film becomes humorous.

We all know what the other option was.
The fact that the team unfortunately lost but then put this on the scoreboard makes the whole bit even better

As a huge fan of the Tokusatsu medium, it's incredible to discover that one of the linked videos includes a discussion about Inframan. Ebert famously loved science fiction, and I knew he had reviewed the film positively, but I've never seen him talk about it before.

The universe's foremost expert on cultural hot drinks has spoken.

We should do well to listen.
RE starbucks picket line--the relevant detail is "picket line, do not cross." Pass that along. Proclaiming that you are in no danger of doing so because you are too aesthetically pure to let Starbucks coffee pass your lips is...unhelpful and does not give the impression you perhaps imagine it does.

I think one of the things that we as people really need to hone in on is that-- by all evidence-- "death" is not a problem our consciousnesses will deal with. DYING could be pretty awful.

Anyways, art is for the living. Art is alive. You don't need to prep to be dead-- you need to live.
i love this quote and earnestly think it is one of the most beautiful and resonant things ever said about why we make art as people and what it means to live and share.

and also, i think of it every time i instead of that choose to watch 15 youtube videos in a row

The biggest funny / sad thing about all of this is that the ORIGINAL manga is a poorly drawn, utterly basic bit of juvenile genius that became explosively popular via an S-Tier redraw. One Punch Man needs crap or decadence-- nothing in between.
I can see a corpo meetings over subsequent seasons of One-Punch Man playing out as:

"People fell in love with the first season of One-Punch Man for being gorgeous, with almost decadent amounts of sakuga and expert direction by one a celebrated director.

... Obviously we need to correct that."
[Review] Despite branded or larger anime-centric social media accounts desperately trying to claim otherwise, One Punch Man season three has no hype, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.

It's often the years that *break* Rider that help it the most in the long run.

The evil Riders of Ryuki. The comedy of Den-O. And absolutely the musical, meditative, location-based Hibiki.
Hibiki is a really nice, relaxed, sweet show that puts you into a wonderfully-realised slice of an ongoing world with a large human cast (principally focused on hot dads on monster-fighting camping trips), and a shifted focus to the POV character being a kid being mentored by the main Rider (1/2)
Without spoiling anything necessarily - can you explain a bit about the show’s strengths (and why it seems like Hibiki has so many detractors)?
