Rachel Reeves says we can expand Heathrow and many other airports without worrying about climate impacts because SAF is a 'game changer'.

Time for a reality check.

We need systemic change, not just individual change - BUT a lot of resistance to systemic change is built on the belief that individuals don't care & won't change.

Individual action can be a good start for creating social momentum and maybe getting involved in campaigning against airport expansion!

"We believe it is reckless to continue piecemeal airport expansion based on poorly evidenced claims of economic benefit, whilst ignoring the ever-increasing costs of damage caused by climate change."
We stand with LADACAN on this important point of principle and hope they are able to appeal.

1) Undermine London's air quality progress
2) Conflict with climate goals
3) Expose more Londoners to harmful aircraft noise www.london.gov.uk/who-we-are/w...

Building the equivalent of the UK's second biggest airport right next to its largest?
Moving the M25?
Increasing noise pollution and air pollution for Londoners?

The UK faces many challenges. Heathrow expansion is not the answer to any of them - and is insanity in a climate crisis.

It really cannot be emphasised enough that facing devastating global climate tipping points we need to be reducing our emissions, NOT increasing them by, for example, massive airport expansion.

Do we need to say it louder for those at the back?

Who's going to tell the aviation industry?

Claims we can expand aviation massively and still avoid climate breakdown are based on carbon offsetting.* Which as people have been pointing out for decades, doesn't work.

*CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation
In news that will surprise pretty much no one working on climate change, carbon offsets have deep-seated systemic problems and are not effective at cutting overall emissions.
Carbon offsets fail to cut global heating due to ‘intractable’ systemic problems, study says
Analysis of 25 years of evidence shows most schemes are poor quality and fail to lower emissions

The emissions of 100,000 extra flights a year can't be magicked away by so-called 'sustainable' aviation fuel. Yet somehow our politicians think we can still hit our climate targets at the same time as expanding airports.

Passed 10,000 signatures: Stop airport expansion: halt all airport expansion plans across the UK
More than 20 airports across the UK have expansion plans, which will result in a combined increase of 60%+ capacity. More flights means more emissions, at a time when we should be doing everything we can to reduce emissions and avert climate catastrophe.

Yet another piece of research which makes it harder to claim that 'sustainable' aviation fuels are the magic solution to allow expansion of aviation without damaging our climate targets.

(clearly it will be completely ignored by government)
This is important - there are huge questions over the supply (and sustainability) of 'sustainable' aviation fuels.

They emit the same as conventional fuel when burned, AND aviation has a hidden climate impact from releasing water vapour and other emissions at altitude, often ignored.
Leaving out non-CO2 from lifecycle assessments means that SAF's benefits in reducing CO2 emissions are overstated, say academics at Delft University. 1/3
