Lots of excellent posts already about how much this sucks. I also wonder how this will be used/ignored by fields that place author names alphabetically (I know this happens in atl some Physics fields).
Google Scholar has introduced a 'Sh-index' metric that scores papers higher if you are first or last author. Apart from the fact metrics are generally bad, this one explicitly punishes PIs who often collaborate, publishing with 2 or 3 equal PIs at the end of the list.

Another new metric to measure something that yet again reduces the contribution of researchers to the arbitrary standards set by the armchair critics of academia.

And wait for it: this one is called a Sh-index 💩

And related to this, aren’t don’t some sub-fields in geoscience, such as palaeo, usually have the senior author as the last author?

Maybe if you’re the senior author it’s less important for you to get the magic beans that this new Google metric would give you…? 🤔

In a strong field, this ranks as a particularly shitty metric.

And my Norway-based peeps can correct me, but I *think* the Norwegian academic system/some institutions value people being higher-up the author list…[1/2]

We come and go, without knowing why we loved this person and not another? Why do we die today and not another? Why now? Why here? Why us and not others? That's why love and death alone feed all world literature. Outside of these two topics, there is nothing worth writing about.
