legalize apartments, desegregate schools, resettle refugees
Sawtelle’s getting another nice big ED1 project that’s replacing an SFH and it looks great. Meanwhile Bass’s housing politics are still stuck in 2008.

I’ve been thinking that Bass is to Yaroslavsky as Schumer is to The Baileys. That generation is hopeless.

“The Great Divorce” by C.S. Lewis is indirectly YIMBY in that hell is an endless expanse of low density estates where everyone is lonely by choice.

There is basically zero YIMBY literature and sci-fi other than Toni Morrison's Jazz and The Expanse.

Compromise your values to appeal to aging “liberals” driven mad by a world where nurses make good money and the children of immigrants routinely outcompete their kids for spots at the best universities?

Whatever happened to the liberal segment of the national security NPIC?

I remember feeling optimistic about CNAS back in 2006-10 when I was paying closer attention to this stuff but 15 years later it feels like the only sensible natsec people are a handful of bluesky posters and like Shashank Joshi

Big blue states flexing their political muscles has been one of the most refreshing meta-narratives of the past year.

I have had people complain to me about their kid's woke private school and I explain that they should send their kid to public school like a normal person.

I'm convinced that 75-85% of NIMBYism is simply "I am older now and I hate it and I want the places where I spent my younger days to look the same so I can pretend I'm not as old as I am."

Cuomo doing as well as he did feels like it has more to do with his having a famous name and the support of the city’s Dem machine than it does with Dem voters in general wanting to give people like Cuomo a pass for their (pretty heinous) sins.

Electeds in both parties are leaping from one existential crisis to another on their way to the bottom of the actuarial table.

Boomers grew up around fewer immigrants than any generation in American history. Their perspective is completely warped.

Right! Manchin and Mamdani are both Dem MVPs in their own way and anyone who can't navigate that dynamic to the overall benefit of the party needs to make room for someone who can.

I think Sonja Trauss said something to the effect of NIMBYism is homeowners' reaction to their own mortality and I kinda feel like that explains more of Schumer's behavior toward Mamdani than donor pandering or the Brooklyn machine or whatever.
