Tastes are an important part of (informal) cultural capital. The Privilege & Participation Survey covers the places that people go to eat:

Takeaway: Pubs the clear favourite, followed by independent and chain restaurants.

Possibly the Privilege & Participation Survey variable that I'm most interested in: Cultural Activities Outside the Home.

A key focus of the Privilege & Participation Survey is cultural capital (alongside social and economic capital, perceptions of privilege, and political participation). Today, the most politically relevant form: Civic Skills.

The final element of social capital measured by the Privilege & Participation Survey: General Social Trust.

A crucial part of social capital is network strength: what help can you expect from contacts? The Privilege & Participation Survey covers this:

Takeaway: Most rely on family or friends; fewer on family friends or colleagues.

Strikes me that people might overstate the number of friends they have from other groups because:

a. They might have internalised the social desirability of having diverse networks.

b. We tend to overestimate the size of minority groups within society (and networks?).
What about homogeneity of social networks? The Privilege & Participation Survey has that covered too:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/10/19/s...

Takeaway: On average, people say 82% of their friends are same ethnicity as them, 64% same sex, and 63% same religion.

Feel for the 9% of people who say they never interact with any of the social networks that the survey asked about.

The Privilege & Participation project showed there are sizeable minorities that are seriously marginalised in terms of economic, social and cultural capital.
And from status and size of social networks to frequency of interaction, also covered by the Privilege & Participation Survey:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/10/12/s...

Takeaway: Bimodal average interaction across different networks; a few times a year or monthly.

Social capital is, of course, multi-faceted. Moving from status of networks to size, as measured in the Privilege & Participation Survey:

Takeaway: Unsurprisingly, people have a few close friends and larger loose networks.
