Possibly the Privilege & Participation Survey variable that I'm most interested in: Cultural Activities Outside the Home.

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/07/20/s...

Takeaway: People do a large number of activities occasionally but only some do 'highbrow' ones often.

And from status and size of social networks to frequency of interaction, also covered by the Privilege & Participation Survey:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/10/12/s...

Takeaway: Bimodal average interaction across different networks; a few times a year or monthly.

Social capital is, of course, multi-faceted. Moving from status of networks to size, as measured in the Privilege & Participation Survey:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/10/08/s...

Takeaway: Unsurprisingly, people have a few close friends and larger loose networks.

Similarly, the Privilege & Participation Survey data also covers how often people are asked to support organisations:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/01/20/s...

Takeaway: People more likely to be asked to support organisations than to take specific political acts.

Moving from economic to social capital, the Privilege & Participation Survey data covers how often people are asked to take political action:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2020/11/05/s...

Takeaway: 20% haven't been asked, in any way, to participate in the last 5 years.

And today, here are the ranked indicators of how people in politics are seen as different from the public:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/02/02/s...

Takeaway: On average, education is the highest ranked difference, followed by who they know.

Another facet of external political efficacy in the Privilege & Participation Survey: perceived attention to the public paid by representatives.

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/01/11/s...

Takeaway: 46% think MPs pay 'None' or 'Hardly any,' and 40% say 'A little bit.'

Today, the partner of yesterday's Privilege & Participation Survey variable: Internal Political Efficacy.

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/01/07/s...

Takeaway: More than 1/2 feel they have the same influence as others but almost 1/3 think they have much less.

Today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable is a stalwart of political behaviour research: External Political Efficacy.

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/01/06/s...

Takeaway: People think they have less influence as they move from the local to the national level.

Happy Monday morning!

Here's the final Privilege & Participation Survey variable on political or civic participation (blurred line!): Religious Involvement.

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/03/08/s...

Takeaway: The data measures MANY facets of religious involvement.

How do non-participants RANK the reasons for their disengagement?

Privilege & Participation Survey data can help here too:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/06/21/s...

Takeaway: Quite flat distribution of mean rankings but lack of confidence, skills and money are top.

I analysed reasons for non-participationin more detail, alongside the reasons that MPs and activists give for why people might not participate, in a recent @johnsmithcentre.com blog:

Last type of support for organisations, the Privilege & Participation Survey variable on unpaid positions of responsibility:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/04/22/s...

Takeaway: over 90% don't hold such a position; 1-2% in each category from less than 1 to 10+ years

Again looking in more detail at organisational support, here are the Privilege & Participation Survey membership variables:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/04/22/s...

Takeaway: 7 in 10 aren't members; amongst those who are, a plurality have been for 10+ years.

Moving onto giving time rather than money, today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable is volunteering for orgs.:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/03/18/s...

Takeaway: Almost 8 in 10 don't volunteer; of those who do, most do it once a month for 3-5 hours.

Drilling down into organisational involvement, here's the Unpaid Position of Responsibility variable in the Privilege & Participation Survey data:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2021/04/22/s...

Key takeaway: 9 in 10 have never held such a position for any organisation.

Why do people disengage from politics?

I asked non-participants, as well as MPs and activists. Here's what I found:

Thoroughly enjoyed using the @JohnSmithCentre #UKYouthPoll2025 data to look at whether happier young people and those who think politics is efficacious are more supportive of democracy:

www.johnsmithcentre.com/news/researc...

SPOILER: They're not!

Need more research to figure out why though.

Here's a powerful quote to illustrate how health conditions can restrict daily life in general and political participation specifically.

This is from a qualitative interview with member of the public with low levels of political activity, who suffered from migraines:

Fittingly, now that hardback copies are available, today I move from demographics to the bread and butter of the Privilege & Participation Survey: political participation.

Specifically, Official Positions:

The Privilege & Participation Survey data contains multiple variables on religious involvement, including relating to civic participation:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/03/08/s...

Coverage: religious identity, attendance, membership, civic skills, and volunteering.

Similarly to disability, today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable, Health Conditions, can have profound implications for ability to participate in politics:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/02/24/s...

Key takeaway: almost 6/10 have none, almost 3/10 have one.

Today's Privilege & Participation Survey variable is a gem! Self-Perceived Accent:

privilegeandparticipation.org/2022/02/17/s...

Respondents who said they have a regional accent then wrote in what it is. Most said they have an accent; their descriptions are very varied.
