The burden of cold and ever-recurring existence weighed down his spirit.
Here he was again.
Overall a decent Mission:Impossible but as series ender I was a little let down. But it probably is time for Cruise (and McQuarrie even more so) to be freed up for more interesting projects.

There are other positives too, the supporting cast is great, particularly Tramell Tillman who basically saves the film when it's sagging, and I loved Nick Offerman and Holt McCallany as the newest iteration of the classic M:I government shirts who don't believe in Hunt.

That said, the biggest one, the return of Donlow, actually worked the best, his character was a lot of fun, and it sold the theme of all actions having consequences really well.

I did find this (and the last one's) attempts to build some kind of overarching story back to the older films a bit ridiculous, revealing that Shea Wigham is Jon Voigt's son, or that the Rabbit Foot MacGuffin from 3 was the Entity are silly retcons really. The fun of these films was no continuity!

Gabriel's death is hilariously brutal though.

Perhaps No Time To Die kind of painted them into a corner, they couldn't kill off Ethan without it seeming like a rip-off of killing Bond. But we never even get an answer as to his mysterious backstory with Gabriel that the last film teased.
December 19, 2025 at 11:00 PM
That made the ending weirdly have a lack of finality, the whole movie ladled on 'THIS IS THE END ETHAN' only for it to end with a whole new team assembled like a lot of the previous movies. I would not be surprised to see a 9th movie with this team.

Luther's death was sad, but I do also think going so early robbed the rest of the film of jeopardy, I knew in the back of my mind that once they'd killed Luther, everyone else, Benji, Grace, whoever, would be fine.
December 19, 2025 at 11:00 PM
I also think that for as convoluted as this was, it moved far too slowly to really sell the urgency. The last film ended with 'we need to find this submarine NOW' only for this to jump ahead a month, and then spend an hour dicking around London, and killing off Luther before we actually back to it.

The plot in these films is always nonsense, but this one was particularly so, it was so funny hearing silly macguffin words like 'poison pill', 'podkova' and 'cruciform key' used over and over again.

Also really recommend the new This Is Lorelei album.

Though it's apparently more of a re-mastered collection of old songs.

I want to love dinosaurs and when the John Williams score comes in it does cheaply work on me but they seriously need to get a grip on these, either stop or actually make an effort.

Jurassic has to be the franchise with the worst good to bad movie ratio, outside of the first one, what's actually good? Parts of Lost World? I don't mind 3 and then World is fun at the start but mostly crap.
December 18, 2025 at 9:50 PM
But the end, wow, the main scary dinosaur is genetically modified and barely looks like one anymore, it's more like a Xenomorph. It seems like the producers of the film are the ones bored with dinosaurs not the audience.

Other positives are the CGI being good as ever, and there being some sequenced with water dinos and pteradactyls that are novel and somewhat exciting.

I suppose Jonathan Bailey is actually pretty good and more layered, and the innocent family who get brought along on the journey are sympathetic by virtue of not being mercenaries, but they are also quite annoying.
December 18, 2025 at 9:50 PM
And wow, is it obvious Rupert Friend is a villain, again, barely an attempt to hide it.

When Ali does a heroic sacrifice... it makes no impact as you don't give a fuck, and then when he's actually fine... it's the same. Like the Chewbacca fake out but worse. The only positive about ScarJo is that she looks good in a tanktop.
December 18, 2025 at 9:50 PM
Scarlett Johansson and Mahershala Ali's characters here are the most basic I think I've ever seen, there's barely even a cursory attempt to make us care about them, and at the end of the day they're still just mercenaries. The turn to altruism is not set up at all.
December 18, 2025 at 9:50 PM
The conceit at the start to explain why the dinosaurs are back on an island as opposed to everywhere like the last movie is that 'people got bored' and it's hard not to see life imitating art there. It's just boring and that's mainly because of the lazy plot and paper-thin characters.
