The burden of cold and ever-recurring existence weighed down his spirit.
Here he was again.
My 2025 big movie catch-up culminated with 'Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning' which I thought was good fun in the classic M:I sense, but comfortable the worst of the 4 McQuarrie movies.

After seeing some dinosaurs at the Manchester Museum, I thought it was a good day to watch 'Jurassic World Rebirth' but that was a bad idea because this really is the epitome of Hollywood mediocrity.

Continued my run of 2025 big movie catch-ups with 'Weapons' which I thought was absolutely superb, a great mix of horror and comedy with plenty of surprises and something to say about 'American' 'society'.

Starting a run of some of the big 2025 movies I haven't seen yet, starting with '28 Years Later' which I thought was absolutely brilliant and probably the best thing Danny Boyle has done in ages, maybe since the first one.

Really enjoyed 'Zodiac Killer Project', especially with a Director Q&A from Charlie Shackleton.

Tonight's film was Luchino Visconti's 'La Terra Trema' which I thought was superb, though please bear in mind that the poster below is total false advertising. This film about Sicilian Fishermen, yes, but it does not ever really show them on the boats, and the storm and danger happens off-screen.

Back on my Yakuza bullshit tonight with another great movie from Kinji Fukusaku 'Sympathy For The Underdog'.

Instead of watching the new Shane Black Parker movie, I watched a different, definitely better take in John Boorman's 'Point Blank' which has Lee Marvin as 'Walker' and is an excellent slice of 1960s neo-noir.

Just saw 'Palestine 36' at HPPH as part of the Leeds Palestinian Film Festival. Not exactly a fun time at the movies but a powerful and important one. A crucial reminder that imperialism and colonialism in Palestine didn't begin in 2023 or even 1948, but with us, Britain.

More Albert Brooks tonight with 'Defending Your Life', which I thought was excellent and made me cry on multiple occasions. Maybe it's because I've been to a funeral this week, or that Meryl Streep looks a bit like my mum or just that my most recent girlfriend was also called Julia but it got me!

After some heavy movies at the Film Festival, decided I wanted some lighter comedic fare, though of course Albert Brooks delivered his usual neurotic, slightly uncomfortable blend of comedy in 'Modern Romance' which despite coming out in 1981 did actually still feel somewhat modern.

Been thinking all day how in a just world Dona Sebastiana from The Secret Agent will become as beloved a character as One Battle After Another's Sensei Sergio.

I said I would watch more Brazilian movies and so my final LIFF film is the very good 'The Secret Agent' a loose, shaggy but highly enjoyable epic about a man in hiding trying to clear his name of false accusations during the military dictatorship.

'Sentimental Value' is another excellent film from Joachim Trier. If like me you could watch Renate Reinsve walking the streets of Oslo being sad and beautiful forever, this delivers more of that, but also some powerful family drama. It wasn't fully emotional devastating but it made me reflect a lot

'Nouvelle Vague' is the second Linklater of the Fest and I think I liked this one slightly more. I'd be interested in hearing how it works for someone who hasn't seen Breathless and knows even less about the French New Wave than I do but for me this works as a very stylish evocation of that era.

'Die My Love' was not quite as terrifying as I thought it would be, but it's still very good, Jennifer Lawrence is as brilliant as everyone says and Pattinson not far behind. Some shocking moments but overall more ambiguous than expected, whether that's for the better is debatable.

'Bugonia' exceeded my expectations, it added enough twists and turns in addition to the big one most people will go in already guessing. Two titanic performances from Stone and Plemons and some really funny dark moments and 2 superb needle drops. I know Lanthimos is a marmite director but I like him
