One day I think I might like a little boat funeral.

Not a giant longship of course.

Just a little rowing boat, in a little lake.

Not a warrior with an army, but a family man at peace and rest.

A King? Of sorts, sharing in the Kingship of Christ in the New Jerusalem.

The Norman buccaneering spirit, and their seeking of Papal approval to invade England, were both elements that even inspired and were used as the model for the crusades.

Beautifully shown in a great book - Empires of the Normans.

One thing people often fail to understand is that the Normans were basically just somewhat Frankicised Vikings.

You see here William the Conqueror's flagship, the Mora, literally a Viking longship.

Norman means Northman. They are Vikings who converted and defended France against... other Vikings.

Viking skiing is actually a real thing.

Important to understand that the waterways of Scandinavia would often freeze. Skis, sleds, sledges, sleighs and even ice skates have all been found in Viking graves. Even large examples, and ones clearly suited for ice - not just snow.

Very true, and very relevant to our situation in the industrial, digital Anthropocene age.

Very true in politics too.

A truly heinous plan.

The US Government is morally bankrupt.

Has been for a long time on this issue.

They say no thrones, no kings.

I say One Throne, Christ is King.

Christ is King.

Tolkien at age 19, a prophet for our times.

A Catholic with extremely far ranging foresight.

A wise man, and a deep student of history.

Especially so of the Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Medieval past.

Peace is not the product of terror or fear.
Peace is not the silence of cemeteries.
Peace is not the silent result of violent repression.
Peace is the generous,
tranquil contribution of all
to the good of all.
Peace is dynamism.
Peace is generosity.
It is right and it is duty.

Oscar Romero.

I think it really is without a doubt that at least some who became Ottoman janissaries remained Christians.

They could very easily cloak their Christianity behind Bektashism.

Lots of studies of Bektashism, but it is clear that its highly syncretic nature would have enabled this.

RIP.

Died in a car accident in Sep 2001 on the 3rd. Just before 9/11.

Only 28 years old.

A different world.

2025 alone.

Multiple instances of hundreds on a single day.

This will continue to go on, and the reality is Ukraine has no way to stop it militarily.

As I have said, Ukraine is being ground down in every respect. Russia holds territory Ukraine cannot dislodge it from, and cannot stop attacks.

Another book on liberation theology I would recommend.

Particularly like this one as it shows just how central land reform was for Romero.

Very important to understand. Every Communist and non-Communist peasant political movement, or leader driven by that, has understood the need for land reform.

If you are looking for a book to start thinking about Liberation Theology, would recommend this one.

Hugo Chavez really spearheaded a lot of things which are spoken about today.

Latin American regional integration, kicking out US companies controlling natural resources, south-south cooperation within the context of multipolarity, significant cooperation with China/Russia, dedollarisation, more.

A traditional saya, wrapping around the hips and midriff, and manto, the scarf which traditionally wrapped partly around the head.

Quasi-burqa like. Flora Tristan pointed out that the Peruvian woman in this dress was far freer than women in Europe to go about her independence.

Happy 80th Independence Day Vietnam!

On September 2nd 1945 Japan officially surrendered, and Ho Chi Minh declared Vietnamese independence.

He referenced the US Declaration of Independence, and the French Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen.

Vietnam today is making great strides.

Bon Appetit, Your Majesty.

Great Korean series on Netflix right now.

Extremely high ranking in terms of popularity.

This cross symbolises the Cross and Blood of Christ.

Blessed are the meek, the poor in spirit, the merciful, the pure of heart, the peacemakers.

This cross symbolises helping the poor and wayfarer, humility and service.

Not far-right nationalism, or the oppression of the foreigner.

A YouGov poll published today indicates that the public would broadly support Cooper on this.

I am not saying that it is right, but I do think it shows where we are as a country.

Pumped with right-wing anti-refugee rhetoric, which in reality is a small issue.

The relationship with China, and Chinese ideas, were so important to the nascent United States that they placed Confucius next to Moses at the Supreme Court.

Temur was perhaps the wisest of the Mongol rulers of China.

Ended Kublai's fruitless and endless wars of aggression, and pursued a policy of strategic patience, diplomacy and commerce.

By the end, he achieved through peace and trade what Kublai failed to gain by force. A true Pax Mongolica.

Good cover article in the New Statesman.

Gentle parenting has its strengths, but truly successful parenting brings drive and purpose to a child’s life, and is very firm in establishing educational habits.

Massive fan of the new Korean series Bon Appetit Your Majesty.

So many interesting themes and twists, based on Korean history and stories.

Not to mention the food 🍱 🎉
