Victim of the Nazis and subsequently the emergent German State who retained notorious "Paragraph 175" of the penal code that locked gay men into a cycle of brief freedoms and longer periods of cruel incarceration meaning jobs and pension benefits remained denied to decent German gay citizens. On 11 June 1943, Karl Gorath, a 20-year-old gay German nurse, was deported to the Auschwitz concentration camp. He was first arrested for homosexuality after being denounced by a jealous lover in 1939, and given a prison sentence. After his release he was sent to the Neuengamme concentration camp, where he was made to wear a pink triangle denoting LGBT+ prisoners. Working in the camp's health department, with some comrades he attempted to smuggle food to Russian prisoners, who were being starved to death. Their plan was discovered by the Nazis, who then sentenced Gorath to transportation to Auschwitz as a criminal and political prisoner, to be denoted with a red triangle. Despite contracting dysentery, he managed to survive the war and was released in 1945. But within a few months he was arrested again by West German authorities, who had kept the homophobic Nazi laws intact. His case was overseen by the same judge, who greeted him with the words "You are already here again!" and gave him the maximum sentence of five years. His lawyer requested that his time served in the concentration camps be counted as part of this, but his request was denied. After his release, because of his convictions he was unable to get a job for a decade. And when the time came to draw his pension, his years interned in concentration camps were deducted from his allowance, as were his unemployment payments. He died in 2003, having never received compensation for his treatment, unlike some other Holocaust survivors. He told his story in a 2000 documentary, "Paragraph 175", named after the relevant section of the penal code. A neighbour in the 'close' Karl lived in keeps his Stolperstein ground plaque in good condition and on the anniversary of his being snatched away, a candle is lit; drawing passers-by attention to his name. German Brasso polish equivalent demonstrating it only takes a little effort to keep these plaques brilliant. I very much hope Ms #JaneHaining's is similarly revered and given the Brasso and Candle treatment each year. Our continued respect costs nothing. 🙏💝 brass memorial plaque for a Scottish Holocaust victim has been unveiled in the centre of Edinburgh. She helped keep children safe until she was betrayed and arrested by German officers in April 1944. Charged with eight offences, she was jailed in Budapest before being transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau by rail in a cattle wagon along with scores of others on 14 May, 1944. Miss Haining succumbed to starvation and the terrible conditions in the camp and died aged 47. Her niece Deirdre MacDowall, 77, was among loved ones attending the memorial "the whole family is very proud". She said: "It's a great honour and I'm so pleased that Jane is being remembered in this way, although she herself would have not wanted a lot of fuss. "We want people to hear her story and to learn from it." We must never forget the victims of Nazism or the lesson from history that persecution and extremism can tragically return," he said. "Jane Haining left Scotland for Hungary to help Jewish children & rather than save herself she tried to protect them and died in Auschwitz. Gunter Demnig's Stolperstein project has become the largest decentralised memorial in the world."

"AIR FRANCE" in capitals is in the bottom right hand square segment - perfectly centred in its notional "box" on the canvas. Stroke One long right to left increased pressure splits the stroke. Stroke Two 3/4 along 1st line there is a sweep line from the 1st - paint thickened it sweeps up to form the tailplane and flourishes down Stroke 3 to 1st line and back up again Stroke 4. Stroke 5 and 6 from the wings the left hand wing has paint dominance; suggesting it was the same paint load that flourished the right hand wing that fades into the background quickly. Arguably suggestive of the "plane" banking to its right.

More broadly, the judgment, while relating only to the meaning of “sex” in the EA2010, seems to have facilitated the more open and frequent expression of prejudiced and exclusionary attitudes towards trans people, including views that gender dysphoria and being trans are not real but are imagined by people with “special identities”. We must of course respect and protect the right of people to hold contested beliefs, but such beliefs must be given expression in ways which respect other people’s rights under the law, including rights to live free from discrimination, harassment and violence. As an analogy, the belief that marriage can only be between a man and a woman is fundamental tenet of some mainstream religions, but nonetheless UK law permits marriage of same-sex couples and it is unlawful to discriminate against or harass them. In respect of trans people, the ECtHR has ruled (see paragraph 69) that the Convention guarantees their right to personal development and physical and moral security, and UK law provides a means for them to be legally recognised in their acquired gender and protected from discrimination and harassment. On the day of the Supreme Court’s judgment I wrote expressing my fears that it would have unintended consequences. I take no pleasure in seeing those fears realised.

As things stand, Keir Starmer has the lowest ratings of any prime minister in history and Labour is at its lowest point ever in the polls. Of course, governing is hard, pragmatism should rule and people should be given time and a chance. But there is simply nothing remaining in this project intellectually or culturally to suggest it can reset the party or the government in the ways that are needed. Indeed, quite the reverse. Because of their hyper-factionalism it's more likely they will pave the way to a Reform government, especially if they leave first past the post in place. The only hope they offer is that other parties are worse than them. Back at the 2017 general election Wes Streeting, the poster boy for the Morgan Tendency, was felt to be in trouble in his Ilford North seat. Momentum, the fleas on the dog, got wind of his plight and redirected their activists to the seat to help save him, which they did. This is what Labour should be, robust in their differences, but certain that the real enemy is without, not within. Labour is dying because it's being denied the oxygen of debate and difference. It is time for the party to breathe once more. [Further reading: It's time to free Labour from this useless leadership]

If someone comes to the decision that they are not trans, we will affirm that identity also. “Affirming” does not mean “coercive”. It means accepting someone’s view of themselves as valid. Those of us who disagree with Dr Buckland’s decision are denigrated as “activists”, as if being an activist is something one should avoid being, when in fact, we are activists merely because we care about the lives of all people (and this includes trans people). This denigration also undermines our collective wealth of experience in the fields of psychotherapy and clinical research. Therapists Against Conversion Therapy and Transphobia #TACTT
