When authoritarians tell you they like authoritarianism, over and over and over and over and over again, believe them
Trump on Egypt: "They have very little crime. Because they don't play games. That's why. Like we do in the United States with governors that have no idea what they're doing."

Ok, apparently Gemini will scrape your on-screen content for suggestions, because Android is now officially the worst. So my friend turned this random setting off. Unfortunately when I asked if that fixed it:

Don't look up.

Another term for “homegrown criminals” would be citizens.

He’s asking Bukele to build prisons so he can ship American citizens to El Salvador.

And don’t forget just how expansive Trump’s concept of criminality is. It includes pretty much anyone who offends him.
Holy shit. Video posted by President Bukele’s team on X shows the moments before his press conference with Trump in which Trump tells him: “We want to do homegrown criminals next. You gotta build about five more places.”

REMINDER: we’re at Step 3 in the Trump Market Fraud & Self-Enrichment Scheme:

Step 1: Short the market
Step 2: Announce tariffs
Step 3: Market crashes
Step 4: Buy on the dip
Step 5: Extort favours from countries
Step 6: Scrap tariffs
Step 7: Market rises
Step 8: Sell on the rise, bank the profits.

I've quoted this passage from Trump -- where he states his intent to cause riots and US economic collapse -- so many times. He flat-out announced it on Fox News in February 2014. In my book HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT I quote my own 2016 essay warning of his plan:

One of the questions I’ve been asking is: what happens if the US government becomes weird about end-to-end encryption and the 1st amendment (because let’s be honest, weird is now on the table.) Can Signal relocate to Europe? These efforts seem to say No.

Trump is teaching the world a simple and yet forgotten lesson: if an authoritarian isn’t stopped, he won’t stop. He’ll move faster. And Trump is dismantling US democracy with lighting speed and some still assume there will be fair elections in two or four years. I highly doubt it.
What Authoritarianism Means

Even critical observers underestimated the speed and scope of the Trumpist assault, they overestimated democratic resilience. What is America now, and what comes next?
