I’ve given up wild swimming. So why does my Volvo smell like mince?

Should I tell the postman he has halitosis? My first wife wouldn’t let me wear shorts.

I buried my father with my bare hands. It’s time we stopped talking about glamping. 1/3

Proof that vocabulary ≠ education
Idiot. A Frenchman has no history in common with a German. Imagining they could create a country together is pure fantasy from a deracinated upper class.

Attention people who take their tree down on Boxing Day. This is entirely wrong-headed. Christmas is a period that starts with Christmas Day not ends with it.

Work post alert. JFC I can’t even with synthetic data and AI personas. Just admit you can’t be arsed doing the research and are just guessing.
Pleased to see this piece. Personally, I find these uses of synthetic data v concerning and I find the traction and endorsements that this work has to be quite baffling, esp given the well-storied role of algorithmic targeting in undermining democracy

It is going to take the USA such a long time to scrub Trumpism off its shoes.
NYT - President Trump will announce that the Navy is to build a new “Trump-class” battleship, which will become the centerpiece of the president’s vision for a new “Golden Fleet.” […]

The greatest sword-fight in movie history.
During the duel, delightfully, the two masters actually *talk shop*, cheerfully discussing techniques, gambits and schools as they dance to and fro across the cliffs. It’s one of the most quotable exchanges in film history.

How about we stop getting AI to do the stuff that humans are good at and focus on getting AI to do the stuff that’s impossible for us.
The OpenAI-Disney deal feels like both parties are totally changing how they previously worked: OpenAI will have to throw up more guardrails, Disney compromise its longstanding IP defence. My latest for @fastcompany.com explores the compromises

The Disney-OpenAI tie-up has huge implications for intellectual property
The House of Mouse is one of the most aggressive defenders of its IP. OpenAI literally just said it’d welcome erotica. What’s going on?

This is what ‘AI’ is for. More of this please. And less of that other thing.
This is a legitimate scientific revolution in meteorology.

Also, to be clear, these models are not the AI LLMs that most people are familiar with. They are machine learning algorithms trained on observations (actually reanalysis).

Meteorologists are surprised that the weather model that did the best job forecasting hurricanes this year was a new one, introduced by Google. AI may be the beginning of a new era of forecasting. n.pr/49MFa1M
