In the last session of the conference he had the privielge to hear from some of Prof Chang’s early and mid-career researchers doing superb work across epidemiology, qualitative research and intervention.

He also gave a talk on ‘NICE guidelines – valuable endeavour or paper exercise?’ chaired by the President of the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry and the Director General for Health. Both lively sessions with great questions. One of the challenges was how to translate ‘paper exercise’ into Mandarin!

Nav ended the week by presenting a keynote lecture at the 64th Annual Congress of the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry attended by over a thousand clinicians and researchers on ‘Closing the implementation gap in suicide prevention’.

Our Director Nav Kapur was in Taiwan last week, hosted by the brilliant Professor Shu-Sen Chang @shusenc. Nav also gave talks on implementation and suicide prevention in clinical services at two of the main clinical psychiatric centres in Taipei and at the Taiwanese Center for Suicide Prevention.

Our website presents the most up-to-date suicide data, including all data we currently hold for deaths that occurred between 2012 and 2024 in the UK and Jersey. This will be updated on a quarterly basis as more data becomes available.

We found numerous factors that may have contributed to suicide and that should be the target of future prevention. Two stood out: mental ill-health and academic problems. Several other factors (e.g., neurodiversity, financial problems) point to the need for targeted support.

Our most recent report is our national review of higher education student suicide deaths. We examined serious incident reports of suspected suicide deaths &incidents of non-fatal self-harm submitted by higher education providers (2003 & 2004)
