In the last session of the conference he had the privielge to hear from some of Prof Chang’s early and mid-career researchers doing superb work across epidemiology, qualitative research and intervention.

He also gave a talk on ‘NICE guidelines – valuable endeavour or paper exercise?’ chaired by the President of the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry and the Director General for Health. Both lively sessions with great questions. One of the challenges was how to translate ‘paper exercise’ into Mandarin!

Nav ended the week by presenting a keynote lecture at the 64th Annual Congress of the Taiwanese Society of Psychiatry attended by over a thousand clinicians and researchers on ‘Closing the implementation gap in suicide prevention’.

Taiwan has a universal health care system which is insurance-based but many of the challenges were similar to the UK – suicide and self-harm in young people, the role of social media, including patients in research and service design, the place of new technology in suicide prevention.

Our conclusions and recommendations to help prevent future deaths are focused on (1) safety concerns, (2) suicide prevention within university systems, (3) amendments to the UUK/PAPYRUS/Samaritans guidance, and (4) safety messages for the wider system

Most reports identified learning to reduce risk of further incidents centred around:
-access to support
-info sharing & communication
-risk recognition & management
-improving info systems
-pastoral care
-staff training & guidance
-confidentiality & access to student info

For this national review, we examined serious incident reviews of suspected suicide by HE students, conducted by HE providers in line with guidance published by @universities-uk.bsky.social. You can view this guidance here tinyurl.com/ksjebwsx
