“Fuck,” Ed rasps. “Fuck, mate, will you get over here? Need to tell you something.” The anxiety is pouring off of Stede in visible torrents. His face is pinched, and he’s standing too taut, too straight. He does as Ed asks and heads over to the couch, but he perches gingerly on the edge like he’s sitting on a bed of nails. He looks like Ed’s about to announce that he’s dying. Or that Ed’s about to break up with him. Or that Ed’s dying to break up with him. “Do something different with your face,” Ed demands, in a choked-up rush. “Please, mate. You look like a kicked cat.” Stede pants a terrified laugh. He does not do anything different with his face. It’s an echo of the other night, when Ed had demanded that Stede stop looking at him. Not a very nice echo, though. Stede’s still a ghastly shade of white, one that seems to be hedging into green territory. Fuck. Not good. Ed’s gotta just– He snatches frantically for a hand, and he feels the tremor of Stede’s bones against his own. He squeezes hard; hard as he fucking can without breaking anything. “Mate, I’m– I just– I like you, man. I really, really fucking like you, okay?” Stede does something different with his face. It’s a welcome change. His jaw releases. Colour seeps back into his cheeks. He lets free a sigh that sounds like it weighs more than a fucking Buick. “Oh,” he says, so relieved that it comes with the slight titter of a laugh. “That’s– Ed, that’s…not exactly news to me. I mean, I think we’ve already established–” “Might be a bit in love with you, even.”

“Told you,” Ed tries again, sizzling away like a coil of pure electricity. “Don’t need to go slow with me anymore, mate. I promise, this is it, yeah? This is what I want.” “Oh,” Stede says calmly. “I believe you.” His hands slip down to grip Ed's ass. As in, one-hand-per-cheek grip, firm and bruising. He tugs Ed’s hips into a forward roll; barely an inch, but enough to create some pointed friction where Ed's blatantly, ruthlessly hard, enough to cause a dry hiss of pleasure to arc up Ed's spine about it. Ed lets himself roll into it, spine slackening, jaw loose. Breathing feels optional. Bones, too. Words. Sort of non-obligatory, non-essential. Somewhere beneath the paper-thin whine in Ed’s ears, he vaguely registers that Stede feels just as fucking hard in his pants as Ed does. And then: words. Stede’s, not Ed’s. Slow, deliberate, velvet-soft. “But we will be taking this slowly, Edward. I will be taking this slowly, and I will be savouring every single second. Because you are far, far too beautiful to rush.” If Ed’s melted vanilla chapstick had been sentient, and it had somehow made a sound while it had been melting? That’s the same sound Ed makes now. This warm, drippy, sliding noise in the back of his throat. For a disorienting moment, he can’t fucking see, and he wonders for a sec if maybe he is melting, melting for real, and maybe the process has started in his fucking eyeballs. But no, they aren’t melted. Just rolled back in his fucking head.
