It’s that strange time at the end of the year when the winds of work are winding down. It appears that April has won an arm-wrestling contest with December, as it’s currently about 50F/10C here in Brooklyn. I can say with ease that winter is my least favorite time of year. A season of slowed energy, diminished color, a yearning for warmth. Cold seems to permeate everything, the drab days bleeding one into another until weeks have blurred by, living in greyscale. But I take solace in the things I value: a good meal, a good tune, my cats, my wife’s embrace or just a brushing of our hands. When the light outside is bleached and bleak, I strive to remember that there’s always light inside. So with a bit of that subtle warmth, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

I recently acquired the complete works of Matsuo Bashō, the 17th century haiku poet, considered by many to be the greatest master of the form. I’ve only just begun reading through it, but I’ve already noticed that his poems do not always adhere to the classic 5-7-5 pattern. The collection is in chronological order, so perhaps he becomes stricter about this later as his style “matures”, but for now, many stanzas do not. Regardless, I am very much enjoying these early poems and would like to think that Bashō was more concerned about the image he is drawing with his words than the technical requirements of the form. Yes, haiku is an interesting intellectual exercise, but also a creative one, so if that image is lessened by the insistence on the former to the detriment of the latter, then the exercise fails. I’ve rambled on about this because I’ve been crafting a piece that also does not conform to 5-7-5. However, I feel like adding more would reduce it, so (hopefully with Bashō’s blessing) here it is: Dreaming of broad leaves The acorn sleeps Beneath an oak tree With my own dreams of the summer sun and winter far behind, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

The distant throb of the dancefloor is muted by slow and steady polyrhythms as piano runs cascade off the walls like falling rain. The air is thick with smoke, the scents of clove and cigar interweaving in the dim light cast by the soffits above. The exhaustion brought on by hours of dancing melts away, drawn out by the stately beats and measured pace, the sounds here a deep breath before diving back into the water. An odd one today, but please bear with me… I dream of long, grey halls of quiet dust and muted sunlight, soft footsteps on the cold stone floor. There’s a strange mix of abandonment and tranquility here, as if the place itself was content to be “apart” and all but empty. I soak in this stillness, a reservoir for times of strife, and awaken with the same quiet inside me, the rush and rumble of the surrounding world briefly kept at bay by this fragment of a dream. It snowed over the weekend here in Brooklyn; not enough to stick, but certainly enough to show that winter has tipped its hat. And whilst my wife and I got a slight taste of flakes during our pre-dawn walk, for the most part those tiny whites were seen only from the windowed warmth of our apartment. That strange, crooked light glowed in the gray sky, turning the view outside soft and muffled. A peaceful contrast, broken only by the low, background drone of the waking city; or, more accurately, the frantic, persistent barking of the downstair neighbor's dog. But even that sharp sound could not negate the sense of stillness built there beyond the glass. This simple contrast between the chill and the inner warmth made a perfect anchor for the day. With a soundtrack for finding quiet in the midst of noise, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

The mad rush of Berlin slowly falls away and the countryside unfolds as I stare out the window of the speeding train. Trees blur by as the horizon holds steady, majestic greenery stretching off to the distant mountains. The subtle sway and weave of travel slowly sinks into my bones, cradling my exhaustion. These liminal spaces (no longer home, but not yet arrived) always stretch, seemingly endless; simultaneously torturous and enjoyable. But as the clatter and clack of the wheels beneath lull me to sleep, I feel my excitement still growing as I rush closer and closer to my destination. There I will take a leap into the new, guided by my dearest friend; creativity, adventure, and uncertainty all await. The air is icy cold, the temperature hovering just below freezing, my breath pluming as I gaze down the near-quiet street. The muted glow of lamp posts goes almost unnoticed, the world bathed instead in the cool light of the fat, gibbous moon. A passing car breaks the silence, an unwelcome, but blessedly brief interruption. As its hum and rattle disappear into the background murmur of Brooklyn, I return my attention to that looming moon. A lone cloud passes across its face, blown by a distant wind I cannot feel. I breathe in the scene a final time, then turn back to my door and the warmth of home. I have only recently stumbled upon the works of Berlinde Deman, but was immediately pulled in by her strange (and often dark) sound explorations. Her music hovers in that shadowy hinterland that lies somewhere on the edges of neoclassical, ambient, and noise. However, there are moments of odd warmth to be had there as well, as heard in this vaguely melancholic, yet hopeful piece. There’s a yearning here that speaks to my current mindset: a longing for the warmth of the summer sun, for less hectic days, for the quiet weightlessness of the undersea. But for now I will instead float upon these muted tones, content in knowing that all those things lie ahead. Here's some more (US) morning mellow.

The holidays are always a tough time, as I often find myself distracted by what was instead of what can be. As Betty Smith famously observed, A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. In point of fact, there are quite a lot of them, especially on the brownstone-sided streets of Carroll Gardens. And there, in the midst of everything, yet somehow off the beaten path, sits Strong Place. Whilst only a block long, both its sidewalks and the road itself are wide and open, less like a side street and more like an avenue. The aforementioned trees tower above, many of them a century old or more, their canopy of branches sheltering the broad byway from the sun during the day, filtering the flickering moonlight after dark. A stroll down that passage is to walk back into history, as those elegant row houses have stood there since the 1840s; admittedly a splash in the pan for our European colleagues, but positively ancient in the knock-down-build-up hustle of New York. Some of my favorite walks take me down that tucked away stretch, a silence settling as I stare up through those leafy bows and catch a glimpse of blue skies or the bright twinkle of a star. So with a bit of sound meandering, here's some more (US) morning mellow.

Various physical impediments have kept me from my predawn walks, but today I finally found myself up to the task. It felt great to be out again in that near dark, the horizon blushed orange with the soft light at the edge of day. I’ll admit to being lost in thought as I trudged along, oblivious to the distant rumble of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, the buzz of an early traffic helicopter high above, and all the other background music of urbania. But rounding the corner for home, I suddenly heard it. The voices of a million birds. The entire block of trees overflowed with chirps and chatter. I am by no means an ornithologist, so I’ve no idea what manner of avians these were, but their song seemed to fill the air, pulsing back and forth between one group and another, asked and answered, asked and answered. I stood stock-still for several minutes, breathing in this repartee, but even as I resumed my return home, the singing never stopped. Passing beneath those trees, peering up into those dark branches to try and see the singers, I felt completely immersed in the sound. Delicate and peaceful, yet insistent; random, yet harmonic, the echoes lasting even as I climbed my steps and closed the door. Floating weightless in the deep, the sunlight gently fractured as it filters down to me. No sound save for the bubbles of my breath. I’ve swum far off the reef and the dark blue depths stare up at me, seemingly endless, as if I were floating in deep space. But as I hang over that vast openness, I am at my most peaceful. Up or down is just a matter of breath; breathe out and descend, breathe in and ascend. Relax to hover, kick my feet to fly. A shoal of bright blue fish breaks rank around me and I’m bedazzled by their flickers of color… With thoughts of descents past and the anticipation of returning to the underneath, here's some more (US) morning mellow.
