The storm over the weekend was dubbed “Fern” by weather forecasters, but this was quite the misnomer. My wife instead took to referring to the proceedings as “Snow Doom 26”, which I thought a great deal more appropriate, as “SD26” dumped more than a foot of snow right outside our doorstep. Susan, in her infinite bravery, took several walks through the maelstrom, GoPro in hand, but I instead opted to stay inside and take in the spectacle from the comfort of my “Art Desk”. From behind the safety of warm glass, I watched the wicked wind turn the heavy fall into a dance, clouds of snow swirling so thick that at times they blotted out the streetlights. Sidewalks disappeared in mere moments, and hearty souls brave enough to venture out trudged by, bundled up like balls of yarn against the cold. I’ve always loved the juxtaposition of the Inside and the Outside in these situations; the glance into a vast iciness from inside a tiny bubble, safe and warm. Like a view through the window of the cottage in the snow globe, here’s some more (US) morning mellow.

Strolling down the wide sidewalks of Brooklyn is a trip around the world. The music of infinite languages comes from passersby and floats out through the doors of storefronts; a veritable Tower Of Babel of linguistic diversity. Those very shops, restaurants, bars, and strange holes-in-the-wall reflect this, from Spanish bodegas to Korean groceries to Russian and Chinese tea houses to Irish pubs and “American” burger joints and sports bars. Food carts sometimes seem to line the streets, a dizzying array of cuisines available in a mere instant, the results often more comforting than the fare at any stuffy sit-down. And whilst the warm summer sun is yet months away, the heart of my borough still throbs with life, even in the dead of winter. So with a taste of that summer yet to come, here’s some more (US) morning mellow.

It’s another strange time here in Brooklyn, with the temperatures hovering somewhere between winter and fall. Walking hand-in-hand through the early dark with my wife, amidst this in-between feeling, I was struck by the nature of time: There we were, in our own shared moment, with events trailing off behind us and possibilities stretching out ahead, each tick of the clock trapped in amber. Yet that shared moment could last forever. Clarice Lispector writes of the “instante-já”: a state beyond the simple "now"; an eternal, intense presence that's always just passing. Sometimes this feeling is overwhelming, but not today. In fact, I found myself quite content to have that bubble never burst, to ride that “instante” forever on the crest of the present, never breaking into the future. I can say with ease that winter is my least favorite time of year. A season of slowed energy, diminished color, a yearning for warmth. Cold seems to permeate everything, the drab days bleeding one into another until weeks have blurred by, living in greyscale. But I take solace in the things I value: a good meal, a good tune, my cats, my wife’s embrace or just a brushing of our hands.
