Ohh nice I'll have to check it out. So far my favorite skeptical biography of him is Dan Vogel's 2 books on him (he is writing a trilogy covering his whole life but has only come out with 2 so far)

He thinks that the Syriac translation can be used to reconstruct the original Greek wording better than the Latin one for various reasons but they both agree on the meaning of the phrase.

Yes but it's not speculation he shows that ancient Latin (translated by Saint Jerome no less) and Syriac translations of Josephus have this phrase in them. Also Origin of Alexandria explicitly says that Josephus did not think Jesus was the Christ.

If this translation is accurate I think I can buy this except for the "if indeed one ought to call him a man" thing. But he has a whole section on that explaining what that would mean from a non Christian perspective but I haven't read it.
