This book is really good. Although it's probably not for people who want a basic overview given how incredibly detailed it is

Ok I need to get this book too lol

I really want to get this when it comes out

Ohh nice I'll have to check it out. So far my favorite skeptical biography of him is Dan Vogel's 2 books on him (he is writing a trilogy covering his whole life but has only come out with 2 so far)

Ok sorry this is more accurate for some reason I forgot that ancient Israelite religion is a direct descendant of ancient Cannanite religion (again credit to @basedball_ on Twitter for making this)

Ok so this is my current understanding of the historical relationship between Islam, Judaism, and Christianity using a kinda evolutionary tree analogy (credit to @basedball_ on Twitter for making this chart)

You know Aristotle was obviously very intelligent but he wasn't perfect and sometimes he was probably a little too gullible lol. Scholars think the animal he is talking about here is a European Bison

Yes but it's not speculation he shows that ancient Latin (translated by Saint Jerome no less) and Syriac translations of Josephus have this phrase in them. Also Origin of Alexandria explicitly says that Josephus did not think Jesus was the Christ.

Ok this is what he says about the "if one can indeed call him a man" passage

The claim here is that he actually isn't affirming Christian theology and that scholars have just misread the Greek text and what Josephus means. Here is his translation:

Ok this book just came out and I am definitely going to read it. It basically makes the case that the references to Jesus in Josephus are almost entirely authentic(!!). It has great scholarly reviews so lol maybe I'll be convinced. It's actually available for free as a pdf

It's quite intriguing that the literary insertions that scholars find in the Quran (verses that were likely added to suras at later times) are justified and explained by the Quran itself in an early Meccan sura (Q 75:19)

Bruh this is crazy. I had no idea.

It's so cool that the Florentine Codex (one of our best primary sources on the Aztecs) has an entry on axolotl. They even drew a picture of one in it. Axolotl are from the lake that Tenochtitlan was built on so the Aztecs knew about axolotl (they were often eaten)

Ok here is what Aristotle actually says (this is from the Oxford translation of his book On the Heavens). Notice how he says nothing about ships sinking over the horizon. Also this is the earliest actual empirical argument for the earth being round that we know of (although the idea predates him)

I really want to get this new book by Diarmaid MacCulloch
November 24, 2024 at 3:48 AM
Ok well here is the Google translation of it
April 4, 2024 at 1:58 AM
Btw do you know if there is a full translation of the document they found? The report didn't do the full translation I don't think (unless I missed something) and I can't read Russian lol. The date is important I think.
