For the next three weeks I’m going to share individual playlists for the 15 chapters in BACKBEATS.

First up, blues legend Sam Lay, who came to Chicago as part of the Great Migration and played with Walter, Wolf, Muddy, and at the “Dylan Goes Electric” concert. King of the “double shuffle.”

So great to see Whitney over here! Give her a follow, she's a wonderful reporter whose work was indispensable in writing the latter portions of WITHOUT CONSENT.
The first trial of a man accused of raping his wife while living with her happened in Salem. A new book by @sarahweinman.com takes a look back at the case and its impact— paired with an expected twist 38 years after the initial trial.

This feels like the most bourgeois, Gen-X, Brooklyn thing I’ve ever shared, but did you know that you can sing Where Is My Car? to the tune of Where Is My Mind? or There Goes My Gun.

The President of the United States just called for Democratic members of Congress to be executed. "HANG THEM", he posted.

@dansinker.com's piece is still the best thing I read this year. As he predicted, the immorality of the movement itself will be it's undoing.

The fight isn't over, but what felt impossible in January, feels possible now. Atlantic/WSJ are joining the chorus. www.theatlantic.com/politics/202...

Absolutely stellar thread of book recommendations (including many of my favorites) and I would also add, because I literally recommended this book last night, THE ACCUSATION by Edward Berenson
Ok BlueSky: what are your favorite history books in terms of sheer page-turning, narrative propulsion? Thinking along the line of Killers of the Flower Moon, etc. Nonfiction chronicles that read like novels or movies.

The #USMNT ends 2025 in a far better place than it might have reasonably hoped to at the close of 2024.

My column on a tumultuous year that ended on an unimaginable high on Tuesday: the 5-1 battering of a genuine world power.

The USMNT coach took charge of a team in flux and initially looked like he would feed that uncertainty. But his foundations are starting to look solid

The code is not complicated. Short bursts indicate an ICE sighting. Long whistles indicate agents making arrests. If you hear the whistle and you’re undocumented, you hide. And if you’re somebody who’s not, you go to the street.

As ICE Street Raids Ramp Up, New Yorkers Stock Up On Whistles
Taking a cue from Chicago, community groups have distributed thousands of whistles in recent weeks — a grassroots system people in other cities have adopted to help neighbors sound the alarm.

Pre-order a copy for your household every time there’s a friendly between now and the World Cup next summer.

The next friendly is Tuesday night, the U.S. vs Uruguay.

If Senate leadership’s goal was to demobilize and depress rank-and-file Democrats, they could not have played their cards better.

This is why we’ve launched the largest primary program that we’ve ever run.
Democratic leaders have failed us again. It's time to get new leaders.
After yet another capitulation by Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats, it's clear we need new leadership capable of mounting a serious opposition to Trump's authoritarian regime. We're launching our la...
