If there's one production aesthetic that's catnip for me, it's retrofuturism. I love films that draw their inspiration from movies like ALIEN and OUTLAND. I love big, chunky keyboards. I love text waterfalling down a screen. I love odd beeps and boops from computers and running lights everywhere.
"While the show doesn’t shy away from depicting the viciousness of capitalism in space, for Bezos, it might be much simpler than that — any vision of capitalism dominating us even as we spread out through the galaxy is a vision, as far as he’s concerned, worth promoting." Good Jacobin is good.
Jeff Bezos and His Billionaire Space Fantasy
Jeff Bezos helped save the sci-fi TV show The Expanse because he wants to promote space colonization — on capitalist terms. But ironically, the show he saved depicts a grim and brutal life for workers...

Everything sucks but tomorrow I'm going to do my annual rewatch of STATION ELEVEN and I will cry and feel clean for a few hours at least.
In 2024, I started a new annual tradition in our household: a complete rewatch of STATION ELEVEN on 11/11. In just a few days, we'll celebrate the second annual STATION ELEVEN marathon on November 11. Things will kick off at 11:00 AM ET, of course. Gotta embrace the gimmick.

Am I thinking about taking a train up to NYC on Thursday to watch AMC's marathon of LONGLEGS, THE MONKEY, and KEEPER on the big screen? I'm not NOT thinking about this.

I am somewhat sympathetic to the imbalance here: that you're negotiating short-term pain for your constituents against a party that truly doesn't give a shit, so at some point, you have to wonder if you've reached a point of diminishing returns on the hardships you've asked voters to take on.

WE HAVE A NEW WEBSITE

This has consumed around 4 months of my life. We've rebuilt the business from the ground-up. New site, new backend, new customer experience, new platform, new everything.

we spent two years flailing, having no idea how to run a business. now...we have more of an idea.
Despite the ravages of age and an internet steeped in misinformation, your eyes – in this one case – do not deceive you: Website different. It’s taken an immense amount of time and effort, but welcome to Aftermath version 2.0:

If SOME PEOPLE don't believe in turning on Sufjan Stevens's Christmas albums immediately after Halloween ends, then SOME PEOPLE can get out of the car and walk.

BLACK MOUNTAIN SIDE (2014): The obvious comparison is THE THING, but there's a whole bunch of Larry Fessenden's WENDIGO and the "Ice" episode of X-FILES in the film's DNA. The slowest of slow burns; loved the science-forward nature of the script, hated (H-A-T-E-D) the movie's lack of a score.

“Democrats care more about business class than the working class.” Progressive copywriters can have that one for free.
My low key conspiracy is that every billionaire democratic donor who saw a flight or a friend's flight out of Tetoboro cancelled on Friday forced this result on Schumer. This was not about helping people it was about helping the donor class not have any minor disruption of their life.

My message to Fetterman: I lost money cancelling a business trip this week, but it's a small price to pay if my neighbors will have access to affordable healthcare. And if he does not vote for ACA extensions, the donations I'll make to his opponent are another expense I'll be happy to take on.

Democrats running away from anything resembling support of government programs is a good reason to vote all of them out.
"A development that appeared to break the logjam: Republicans proposed that healthcare funding be provided directly to households rather than used to pay for a 1-year extension of ACA subsidies. That involves sending federal money into FSAs instead of insurance companies" www.wsj.com/politics/pol...
Republicans Pitch Alternative to ACA Extension to End Government Shutdown
A proposal by GOP senators to send money directly to consumers’ health accounts rather than to insurance companies showed signs of breaking a stalemate on negotiations.

BUGONIA (2025): I am not among the Yorgos Lanthimos faithful, but this might be the movie of his I like the most. Emma Stone is divine, of course, but the film really is a showcase for Jesse Plemons. Few actors oscillate between empathy and cruelty quite like him, and he's used to great effect here.

Just finished The Autumn Springs Retirement Home Massacre by @pfracassi.bsky.social and it’s without question the best slasher I’ve ever read. Equal parts THELMA and SCREAM. Can’t recommend it enough to horror readers out there.

Finally on THAT chapter of ALAN WAKE 2, and it’s exactly as much fun as expected. I don’t know how long Remedy Entertainment can keep making games like this and CONTROL before there are creative differences or financial issues, but I’m grateful for the big swings as long as they last.
