Starting my annual #Discworld read-through. I love this. I sleep listening to the audio book versions, that's how much I love them. And no matter how well I know the texts, I get a thrill each and every time. If you haven't read them yet...what are you waiting for?

I always thought I hated ABBA's music. But then I like Mamma Mia. And I heard some great covers of ABBA songs (Sinergy, Information Society, etc.). And I realized...I don't hate ABBA's music. I just hate ABBA. Which is awkward, because my wife loves them.

the greatest finale of any tv show is undoubtedly Six Feet Under (pls no spoilery discussions of it, Mog (they/them) still hasn't seen the show all the way through), but i'd love to hear other greats

Bought the first four volumes of the new full-color #ElfQuest books. I have the original hard covers (from the '80s, I believe) in storage, and the B&W compilations on PDF. But I couldn't resist these. They're so pretty! Beside, I'm always happy to keep supporting @elfquest.bsky.social.

When I Lived in China (a series):

When I lived in China, the local grocery store had frozen personal pizzas that were labeled "American Style." They were all ham and pineapple. I have no idea what to make of this.

our annual Twilight Zone marathon has me thinking that Rod Serling held a dim view of (a) marriage and (b) children. there are a LOT of bad marriages in TZ eps, and a LOTTTTT of positively monstrous children.

Proof that I am old now: I'm starting the new year by somehow having injured my back/neck/left arm while sleeping. And now I'm all cuddled up with a heating pad.

My year in books. I love reading, but for a few years I wasn't making enough time to really devote to it. Big improvement this year, and I'm very pleased. I feel like it did me a lot of good, keeping my brain active and my emotions steadier.

And now, to end the movie marathon, A Muppet Christmas Carol. The best version ever. It's beautiful and sweet and well-acted and has wonderful songs. It makes me sing, and cry a little, every single time. Michael Cain kills as Scrooge, and Gonzo is incredibly charming as Dickens.

And now, The Christmas Toy. Before Toy Story, this one had its own ideas of how toys behaved when left alone. Another childhood favorite that I can never really let go of. Plus, some pretty decent songs. As a kid, I was always jealous that these kids had a whole room just for playing with toys.

Next up: The Hogfather. Good Sir Terry's contribution to the wonders of the season. Containing one of the best monologues ever made. "To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape." Chills, every single time. Only Pratchett's rendition of Death can make you feel so very good.

Christmas Day watching starts with the Rank & Bass version of The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus. Based on the book by L. Frank Baum, it has a truly fascinating mythology for it. One of my favorites all the way back to childhood.

We're having a great day, hope you are, too. My wife got me two books, a TV show, a movie I desperately wanted, three flannel button-ups, and an agender t-shirt. We're having cinnamon rolls with hot chocolate (traditional Christmas morning breakfast), to be followed by home-made chili.

Finishing the night with The Man Who Invented Christmas. A charming little movie about the writing of A Christmas Carol. An examination of Christmas, family, and the fascinating process of writing. Some really interesting things to say about what really matters.

Time for another romance. Single All the Way, featuring your standard "we don't know we're right for each other" best friends. Except these two are gay men. Very charming cast, including the small town family of one of the leads. No annoying homophobia. Very uplifting.

Now we're watching Red One. We watched it last year, expecting an amusing train wreck. It turns out that it's actually a lot of fun, and very enjoyable. I mean, it's not deep, and it'll never win an Oscar. But it's silly and enjoyable and the action scenes are pretty good. Great cast, too.

Next up: A Christmas Story. A fun little movie, with a pretty good grip on what it's like to be a kid. Yeah, it's chock full of "good ol' days" nostalgia, but the cast is charming and the family dynamics are very sweet. Plus, it gave us The Lamp, for which we should always be grateful.
