Delighted to say that an updated and expanded version of my series on one of the most extraordinary acts in aviation history will be running on The Up Front over the coming weeks.

And even better: it's now completely free to read.
In December 1941, Pan Am flight 18602 was trapped the wrong side of the Pacific by the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.

To get home, her civilian crew would need to do the near-impossible: circumnavigate the world in commercial seaplane.

In our new series, we tell tell their remarkable story.

Been listening to the Decoder podcast on @theverge.com, specifically the recent car CEO episodes. Each one of them has made me more determined to hold onto my aging cars and go with e-bikes/cargo e-bikes as much as possible. It amazes me how unappealing Ford, GM, and Rivian make their cars sound.

Full bike racks at the library today. (Forgot to take a picture, alas.) Always nice to see people using bikes to get downtown. #bikesky

Have dug out the #CargoBike for the first time in a month to deliver kid to after school activity. It’s not that it’s been so cold (though it’s been cold), but that the streets have been full of (melting) snow mixed with salt.

Of course it immediately started raining when I got home.

Paris | Before, the banks of the Seine were motorways, with daily traffic jams and pollution.
Today are parks for people and play areas for everyone.
That's what changing a city is all about, even if it's been difficult.
We are proud of our Mayor @annehidalgo.bsky.social's commitment and work.

@marthawells.bsky.social Stuck in bed sick. Fortunately I saw the sale on the Fall of Ille-Rien and picked up all three volumes, since I don't think I can manage the hardbacks from downstairs. Been a while since I've read these. Picking up stuff I missed the first time around.

Thank you.

One of President Carter’s many humanitarian efforts was the eradication of guinea worm, a parasite that causes incredibly painful and debilitating disease in some of the poorest parts of the world.

And he’s almost done it.

In 2023, there were 14 cases. When he started, there were millions a year.

@catboycdr.bsky.social What's the general career path look like after being 'head of shuttles' for a Historical or Flagship type ship? This assumes you don't want to go live on a Starbase and do shuttles there. Defiant-class command? Command track on a larger ship?

Based on nothing more than a video of Vance saying he likes beer, I now find myself doubting whether he actually likes beer. He comes off as so much the opposite of genuine that it is impossible to take even his most mundane statements as even plausibly true. The man has resting mendacity face.
