I just recently rewatched Police Squad! and I realize not everything can have this level of comedic density but jesus christ I miss media that rewards actually paying attention to it

...and then, unbelievably, the woman turns and says, "Pepto coffee? It's disgusting." Yes, that is the joke, restated out loud. Gotta beat this dead horse some more.
December 2, 2025 at 11:21 PM
And then the show doubles down on it. Get a close-up of that pepto bottle. Then close-ups reaction shots! Make sure the audience sees the silly thing, and recognizes that it's gross! The joke is dead at this point.

Here we see a woman pour a cup of coffee, and then dump Pepto-Bismol into it like creamer. Fantastic gag, this shot is perfect. You get the surprise of her lifting the bottle into frame, her nonchalant expression doing something insane, and the reaction from the room in one shot. Brilliant.

i thought i might do a collection of open source example Love2D games to do some practice in the engine and also provide a community resource. i'm not proud of how long i've been playing my flappy bird clone today instead

Just more appreciation of movies that allow the viewer to explore the setting
November 19, 2025 at 8:07 AM
Wes Anderson's stylized aesthetic is interesting because he doesn't allow his signature straight-on camera angles to flatten things. The scenes are so densely layered that it really feels like you've got your eyes right up to the dollhouse, peering deep into it
November 19, 2025 at 7:15 AM
part of why i've become a sicko for Spielberg in recent years is not only because he's a master of composition and brilliant at detailed layering of foreground/midground/background, but also he fluidly moves actors between those layers. even a humdrum scene like "guy leaves house" is like a dance
November 19, 2025 at 6:41 AM
the best animation recognizes its strength is creating these layered compositions to build a place you feel like you've been to because the viewer's eye can explore every luxurious detail
November 19, 2025 at 5:05 AM
from banal to fantastical, I love to see depth and an actual composition on screen
November 19, 2025 at 3:06 AM
shoutout to shots in movies where there's a clear foreground, midground, and background in relatively sharp focus so the audience actually feels immersed in the space
