When I think about how exquisitely careful NEH staff were to be fair, impartial, and rigorous, and how much work people put into grants so small they’re pocket change…I just want to scream.

Struck this morning by how the win wasn’t from the UC system itself pushing back—it was its worker power through *unions* and aligned groups like @aaup.org defending UC interests, even though admin itself wasn’t.
There’s some kind of lesson here
One reason why elite schools (Columbia, Brown, Cornell) caving to Trump’s illegal impoundment and extortion is so galling — a betrayal, really — is that they would have won had they fought. By giving up, they guaranteed every other school will have to fight harder.

One of the most important lessons you have to learn about what a university "is" is a very vulgar marxist distinction between its *managers* (directly or indirectly appointed by capital and/or state government) and its *labor,* who come to the university out of love and idealism.

BREAKING: In AAUP et al v. Trump (wall-to-wall union lawsuit challenging the administration’s unlawful use of TItle VI to reshape the University of California system), the faculty and staff of the UC system WON!!!

We were granted our preliminary injunction! @aaup.org

Listen to Greg!!
All UC faculty should join their local CUCFA and all faculty everywhere should join the AAUP. When we fight, we win, against feckless UC Regents and against a faithless federal government.

And if you have a union, join that too (I know most UC TT faculty don't). And if you can afford both, do both. AFT membership usually covers AAUP dues too. They're good at different things, and the more tapped in we are to more energy, the better.

Fed. judge holds that the Trump administration engaged in coercive and retaliatory conduct in violation of the First and Tenth Amendments in its pretextual attacks on the University of California system.

Here at UCLA you can and should join @uclafa.bsky.social, which is an AAUP affiliate and one of the Council of UC Faculty Associations (CUCFA). If you want to fight, this is how you do it and who you do it with.
Institutions are failing us, including universities that, in principle, ought to be standing up for academic freedom.

Academic friends, if you want to survive this moment, join the AAUP. Help yourself and colleagues at other institutions.
