He didn't have to show up Monday. Fearing he wasn't ready, some tried to talk him out of it.

But understanding the moment, Gregg Popovich was determined to live up to it, one last time.

Gift link to a column about one of the darnedest things I've ever seen:

One last time, Gregg Popovich lives up to the moment
Popovich explained why it was time for him to retire from coaching, and why Mitch Johnson is the ideal man to lead the San Antonio Spurs.

Have been watching this game involving the Greatest Football Coach of All Time for four plays. Saw his team fall for this fake field goal, then commit two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and a hold.

The star wants to play. The team doc, worried about a more serious injury, says to sit out one more game.

But what if one more game saves the team $55 million? It’s an imaginary scenario, but not an unlikely one.

It’s also why the NBA's 65-game rule needs to go.

Why Wemby's upcoming extension exposes flaw in NBA rule
Victor Wembanyama will miss around 10 games with a left calf injury, giving him little margin to be eligible for end-of-season awards under the 65-game rule.

Public service announcement:

Just as there’s no period in Darrell K Royal, there is no hyphen in David Jones Garcia.

But eventually there will be statues in Texas of both.
David Jones-Garcia .............. welcome to the Spurs' plans

“I’m a Texan,” declared the Oklahoma-born Polish citizen with the British accent.

Jeremy Sochan wants to stay in San Antonio. Over the next few weeks, he has a great chance to show why the Spurs should want that, too.

How Jeremy Sochan can make his case for new contract with Spurs
With Victor Wembanyama likely out with a calf injury for a few weeks, the fourth-year pro has a chance to prove his importance to the Spurs' long-term plans.

A question for magazine publishers, book agents, fawning feature writers, and now, apparently, more than one aspiring presidential candidate:

Spurs announce Victor Wembanyama underwent an MRI that revealed he has a left calf strain. The injury occurred in Friday night’s loss to Golden State.

A league source said he will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks.

What a kind, wonderful endorsement of our paper. Thanks for reading.
Thank you for the work you do for San Antonio Express News. Reading the newspaper this past year has made me a better person, a more thoughtful person

“Somebody speaks to you a certain way, you have to respond a certain way.”

Wemby's devastating dunk on a bleep-talking Draymond was waved off Friday, but counted more than can be quantified on a scoreboard.

On no more Mr. Nice Wemby, w/Draymond react:

Losing Todd is as devastating as I always feared it would be. Counted it up, and I’m pretty sure I got to see him play 18 times. Some of the happiest nights of my life. As it once said in the Multnomah County tunnel, once and for always, Todd Snider rules.

Gonna write something now but I interviewed for the last time in January. He had a lot of problems in his final years but he was determined to work and be creative to the end. I hope he is at peace now.

Wemby on this moment:

“It's not trying to prove anything to anybody. It's just, at some point, somebody speaks to you a certain way, you have to respond a certain way.”
HOOOOOOOOOOOLY 💩 VICTOR...
They called a foul on the floor but Wemby slamming on Draymond on the inbounds is cinema and Wemby let Dray know after the slam

I might have mentioned this in France a couple of summers ago but Steph vs. Wemby is pretty fun.

Warriors are in trouble against Wemby if tonight comes down to penalty kicks.

Went to ask about his status, and learned two things: He’s playing, and he enthusiastically recommends mixing pesto with marinara sauce on pregame spaghetti.
Per Spurs, Julian Champagnie is AVAILABLE to play tonight

Not really the point of this week’s news, but I’ve been struck by how all the weird-ass email rants from readers I’ve assumed were crazy for the last 25 years are actually way more coherent than the correspondence between the richest men in the world.

Generally a fan of the BlueSky but folks' general inability here to comprehend how live Tweeting works is something I was kind of unprepared for.

It's like, yes, I am aware there is more than one quarter in a basketball game. You don't have to parachute in a day later to tell me.
The Spurs are choking out Golden State at the start of this one.

Warriors with one FG in the final eight minutes (!!!) of the 1Q as Spurs seize a 28-14 early lead.
