Darn it all to heck! My Pelias Geocoder is matching all my addresses to their city centers. I guess that didn't install correctly.
November 21, 2025 at 9:58 PM
I'm back to working on an NIH funded project that was reinstated! Good news: at some point I installed a Pelias geocoder on this computer and the new dataset is reasonably formatted. It looks like I cleaned the last set by hand (remove apartment numbers, etc.). But maybe I can run this tomorrow.

It's stuff like this that makes it hard for me to explain exactly what I do for my job.

I think the data structure for Medieval Murder Maps might be a useful starting point for a new database design project. medievalmurdermap.co.uk

I'm going to be talking about cartography in QGIS at PostGIS Day next week! It's easy to connect a PostGIS database to QGIS for data so learn some tips for doing good data viz. Free. Online. Level up. #gischat

Dear publishers,
If you want me to use a specific font in my maps, please tell me that in your art specs, not at the end of the publication process. In addition, please choose a freely available font.

Signed, an academic cartographer who is just trying to get things off her to-do list.

Score one for my draft Maps in R workshop! I used it in office hours to help someone visualize their data.
November 18, 2025 at 10:31 PM
As I work through popular ways to make maps in R for this new workshop, I have come to the conclusion that labels are by far the hardest part of cartography. Hands down the hardest.
November 18, 2025 at 8:21 PM
Yes. 90s alternative is the right music for writing the ggplot section of my Maps in R workshop.
November 18, 2025 at 5:11 PM
Today's goal: assess the status of the Maps in R workshop I started writing 6 months ago.

How's it going? Well, it's 3:30 and I'm just now actually going to look at the text.

Instead of the drums in the deep, you get this bear aggressively bagpiping to remind you there is still time to join UC GIS Week 2025.

This event is free and open to the public. Registration via Eventbrite is required: www.eventbrite.com/e/uc-gis-wee...

This is a great online conference and it's FREE! You don't need to be affiliated with the University of California to attend.

The FOSS4G North America @foss4gna.bsky.social team is actively discussing where to have the conference next year. Where do you suggest?

I was at FOSS4GNA last week and at California's State GIS Day today and my big takeaway is that Geo of all types runs on human relationships. That is all. It's just people helping each other. #gischat

In case you thought @foss4gna.bsky.social is over, so the team is getting a break... Think again! We're already planning for next year. If you'd like to help, we need more people. #gischat

I'll be there this afternoon to chat about open source geospatial tools. I'm looking forward to seeing my friends who work for the state! #gischat

RIP Charlie Brown/Lucy football meme. 😥
Thanks to Chuck Schumer, the assembly line at the Lucy/Charlie Brown football meme factory has broken down. Folks are advised to look for other metaphors until service can be restored.

How do I recover from three intense conference days bookended by long flights? Do something completely creative and not analytical (and doesn't involve people)! This is a vegetarian pot pie - roasted vegetables (turnips, rutabaga, parsnips, acorn squash) and an onion and garlic bechamel.
November 8, 2025 at 1:34 AM
If you are planning to attend, please add the session to your schedule in the Whova conference app so I know if I need to ask for a bigger room.
I'm prepping for tomorrow's FOSS4GNA version of Hand Drawn Maps, making sure the camera works with this computer. Join me tomorrow for some map fun!
