This podcast was a doozy. Highly recommend giving it a listen. There are lots of really rough moments. I was struck by the pettiness in this section and general disrespect throughout the interview. The questions asked were all fair and should’ve been expected.
Roose: Last year, activist fund and short seller Hindenburg Research came out with a report arguing, among other things, that Roblox was, "compromising child safety in order to report growth to investors." One of the things they pointed to was that there had been a decline in your spending on trust and safety. You have denied that. Why? What did they have wrong? Baszucki: Fun. Let's keep going down this. And so, first off, Hindenburg is no longer in existence, correct? So, you should report on that. They went out of business for some reason. The other thing is, have you researched that information? Roose: Um -- Baszucki: Because you're asking me about this, I'm curious if you've done your own research. Roose: I have, I have done some research about -- Baszucki: And what's your take on that? Roose: Well, I'm asking you. Baszucki: So it's really interesting, because I think we're diving into a situation where we're getting better, better, better. But would you ask the same situation of someone who converted from maybe hypermanual labor making cars by hand to an assembly line? The assembly line might be infinitely better and at the same time not have so many people. So, I think what they're referring to is moving more and more and more and more to A.I. Arguably, is it better to have A.I. systems reviewing every image, every piece of text, all of that, or to keep doing that manually? So I think that was a misnomer. And I think if you interview anyone in our safety team or safety systems, that would be just part of making our systems better. And say you and I, we're a system, what is the best way to review every single image going into Roblox at higher and higher quality? And say we figured out the best way to do that is to do it with better and better A.I. models. Would vou pick that? Baszucki: Yeah, I would actually lean in harder. @ianlmorgan.bsky.social laying out how early career researchers are particularly being harmed in this moment. I think most of us would LOVE “radical transparency” and increased innovation in research. Right now we are facing the exact opposite
We no longer have access to equipment service contracts, lab managers, technicians, and training programs due to the cancellation of $2.6 billion (35 percent) of NIH contract spending. Without equipment service contracts, we now have to choose between paying exorbitant fees or giving up on research projects entirely when our equipment inevitably breaks down. With the ongoing hiring freeze, highly trained early career researchers can no longer transition to more permanent positions at the NIH, so we are losing top talent who want to stay in the United States and contribute their unique skills to our economy but are now being forced to look elsewhere.

Some might say this is partisan behavior, but all of the “non-partisan” behavior I have seen involves limited transparency and destroying systems. Eager to see how the new “CDC leadership” works to regain trust. Open to being proven wrong, but I still am waiting on a clear vision of what is success…
Public health shouldn't be partisan. Vaccines have saved millions of lives under administrations of both parties. Parents deserve a CDC they can trust to put children above politics, evidence above ideology and facts above fear. I was fired for holding that line. But the line doesn't disappear with me. It runs through every parent deciding whether to vaccinate a child, every physician counseling patients, and every American who demands accountability.

PREHDS has a two-factor structure, and we selected six items with strong internal consistency and expected correlations. The tool is for parents and caregivers across pediatric settings, and for researchers and health systems that need a practical way to assess and track their experiences.

This is also my sentiment. AI can be a tool for people, but all tools have their flaws and limitations. Declarations that AI on its own will solve problems that take critical thinking, explanation when wrong, and cautious communication are in conflict with the predictive outputs generated by AI.
Lately, I've been preoccupied with a different question: What if generative Al isn't God in the machine or vaporware? What if it's just good enough, useful to many without being revolutionary? Right now, the models don't think-they predict and arrange tokens of language to provide plausible responses to queries. There is little compelling evidence that they will evolve without some kind of quantum research leap. What if they never stop hallucinating and never develop the kind of creative ingenuity that powers actual human intelligence? The models being good enough doesn't mean that the industry collapses overnight or that the technology is useless (though it could). The technology may still do an excellent job of making our educational system irrelevant, leaving a generation reliant on getting answers from a chatbot instead of thinking for themselves, without the promised advantage of a sentient bot that invents cancer cures.

These results show who is more likely to report discrimination which could possibly lead to a breakdown in trust. Better data, especially with more granular racial groups, can sharpen that picture and guide change. Consequences of discrimination are important (come to my dissertation defense)

We analyzed 12 years of Health and Retirement Study data. Black adults in middle age were more likely than White adults to report discrimination, that gap narrowed later. Reports were also higher among people who were uninsured, had depressive symptoms, arthritis, more doctor visits, or higher BMI.

To do health disparities research you MUST consider social factors. Despite statements suggesting that “health disparities are still acceptable to research” this definition of DEI contradicts that.

Russ Vought said last week that an entire institute of the NIH is DEI (referring to NIMHD).
From NIMHD website: What are Health Disparities? Health disparities are largely preventable health differences that adversely affect populations who experience greater challenges to optimal health and are closely linked with intergenerational social, economic, and/or environmental disadvantage. About NIMHD: NIMHD was first established as the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities (Public Law 106-525), in 2000 and redesignated as an Institute in 2010, as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Public Law. 111-148). The Institute's full history dates back to the creation of the Office of Minority Programs in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director in 1990. Then, in 1993 (Public Law 103-43), the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) established the Office of Research on Minority Health, which developed a research agenda for minority health at NIH.

Radical transparency and innovation in science facilitated through (checks notes), the footnote of a single document by someone who is not a scientist
The pause came in the form of a footnote from the Office of Management and Budget Director Russell Vought’s office, in a document that doles out federal funds to the National Institutes of Health. The footnote stipulated that the agency’s funding for the remainder of the fiscal year could only go to staff salaries and expenses, not to new grants or certain grants that are up for renewal. Most NIH-funded research is done by outside scientists at labs across the country.
