I think almost all scientific projects should be planned carefully. And I think an app can dramatically improve that. So I wrote an app for that (free for now, if you can fund this let me know). I tested it quite a bit (>8000 users in beta so far). try it: planyourscience.com

And the next step? Full voxel-level modeling.

Recent numerical advances cracked the scalability barrier. Voxel-level hierarchical modeling is now feasible, revealing just how punishing traditional multiple-comparison adjustments really are.

Very excited to hear about this! We find Bayesian multi-level modeling at the ROI level super helpful (e.g. www.cell.com/neuron/fullt... ), will be nice to not have to artificially carve the data into parcels a priori!

Recovery, relapse, and genetic risk in eating disorders.

A Danish study of more than 10,000 people with anorexia, bulimia, or EDNOS found that almost 9 in 10 reached a period of remission, and that genetic factors shaped who recovered and who relapsed.

This has been in the works for over a decade when we were just goofing around testing sound localisation in my in-laws' kitchen... But we finally managed to do some reasonably controlled experiments on this. #psychscisky #neuroskyence

There is so much to be disappointed about in this story--from the institutional response to Miles Hewstone himself. We still have a lot of work to do to make academic environments inclusive spaces where everyone can thrive, and where harassers are held accountable.

Very excited to introduce InteroMap, a new bodily mapping tool designed to measure how we subjectively experience our bodily sensations, what we call interoceptive phenomenology 🧵👇

The default prior for the intercept in both {rstanarm} and {brms} are very wide.

Counterintuitively - being on the logit scale, this is actually translates to a **strong** prior that p(y=1) is near 1 or near 0.

Always check your priors!

In this preprint, we concurrently fit the HRF alongside pRF parameters doi.org/10.1101/2025...

- HRF varies between visual areas
- HRF also varies with pRF stimulus designs (due to nonlinearities?)
- Esp. when fitting complex models this can skew results a lot!

This is awful news. Jonny was one of my Masters thesis advisors at York. I remember that summer fondly, full of theoretical chats with Beth and Jonny and frequent trips to the pub! Jonny was an immensely supportive, calm and trusting mentor. I will miss him too.
Jonny Smallwood @themindwanders.bsky.social was a beloved friend and mentor. He was taken from us too soon. His was a beautiful mind who understood the beauty of minds. As ever before, his kind voice guides me and his work will continue. We miss you Jonny. www.cbs.mpg.de/news/obituar...

In this new research, we found that truth beliefs can be successfully conditioned:

Statements - true and false - are rated as more true after their pairing with positive than negative pictures.

This effect bridges research on evaluative conditioning and misinformation.

I worked with Jonny for 5 years during my formative years as a scientist. He influenced how I see life deeply. Although I won't hear him explain things to me again, his words and kindness will live through those whom he inspired. We were so lucky to have him in our lives. We miss you a lot, Jonny.

Wow, what a huge loss.

I was lucky enough to interview Smallwood for multiple pieces over the years- he was always generous with his time and clever with his words. He struck me as one of those rare scientists who wasn’t afraid to go against the grain and try something completely new.
