sometimes I look around and start tearing up a little bit at how happy I am to live here

I have a tendency to say this every day but I love Philadelphia so much and feel like it’s such an honor to get to live here with my neighbors.

🚨🚨🚨 The Subjectivity Lab is looking for a lab manager! The position is available immediately. We want someone who can help coordinate our large sample fMRI study, plus other behavioral work. Because *gestures at everything* the job was approved only now (ends in June 2026). Great opportunity! 🧵 1/4

13/ Paulina will definitely be in my book, but she deserves proper recognition in a major publication profile. I would do it, but I am writing a book. Someone should be beat me to it!
I came across her work in the first chapter of the late David Golumbia's "Cyberlibertarianism."

Obviously, no guarantee that we can/want to cover it, but it's actually helpful from the journalist side since keeping track of all the new embargoed papers every day is overwhelming.

Yea, as a journalist, I really appreciate when scientists reach out to let me know a paper is coming out. Just a couple sentences is great along with a link to the preprint or a pdf of the paper. Typically, these are scientists who have read my work on similar topics.

The first in-person Possible Futures workshop was amazing!

As I run more of these, it strikes me how many themes are so consistent: desire for ecological restoration. Connection. Autonomy. Privacy. Dignity. Leisure. Peace. Again and again, we find common ground and shared visions. 🌱
In the foreground, a group of 3 people (cropped from the torso down) are gathered around a wooden table, flipping through magazines and cutting out pages. The person on the left is wearing a denim jacket and jeans, has light skin, and is wearing bracelets. The person behind them is light-skinned and wearing a pink shirt. On the right, there is another light-skinned person wearing a patterned button-down and black jeans. In the background, more people are seated around a table covered in magazines. Handwritten sharpie scribbled notes that read "In 2050, we are - Default disconnected - Cryptographically secure - No one drives a fucking car ever again - Autonomic (?)". Around the notes are scraps of paper. A collage on a light blue background. At the top of the collage, there is text reading "Click the close button to close the window". In a different font, there is text reading "For we are wild beings. Wild to the core." There is a border of a 2000s-looking Windows Vista image viewer window that has been cut to be breaking open on the left side. Inside the window is an image of a dog about to jump off of a pier into the water, also facing the left, as if it was to jump out of the broken computer window.

does struggling to write a dissertation count as a “weird little issue”?

The ones I'm most familiar with are related to funding proposals and science policy recommendations, but I'd love to hear about any other applications of the white paper format in and around science!
norabradford.bsky.social
tldr; how does your field use white papers? do you have examples?
I'm teaching a few classes on writing and they're based on topics in neuroscience and animal cognition. The first big assignment for students is a white paper and I'm hoping to give students an idea of how white papers can be used.

yay! any chance there will be a virtual option? or just recordings?

🤦🏼‍♀️ i can’t say i’m surprised but uchicago absolutely wont be the same place if this “restructuring” goes thru. all the science majors i knew are way better scientists *because* of the liberal arts education they got.

lots of chatter today about the consequences of uchicago "restructuring" (read: consolidating/slashing/cutting) its arts & humanities programs chicagomaroon.com/48215/news/u...

so i thought i'd check in on how its expensive new climate engineering program is faring

I am begging journalists to stop platforming him. These objects are SO EXCITING and there are people doing really good science on them and he is not one of them.

Loeb: we must stick to the facts, not judge things based on public opinion.

Also Loeb: Look at how many likes and messages my ideas get! I must be doing it right.
