I'm suspicious of those who don't aim to haunt a bookshop or a library. If the afterlife isn't the point you tackle the eternal 'to be read' pile I'm not sure we can ever call ourselves friends. If I am not allowed to read as a ghost there will be much trouble. – #DAKilroy #Books

Because our politics is in such a terrible place, I think we downplay quite how awful Kemi Badenoch has been.

In any other era the leader of the Conservatives saying 'only migrants commit sex crimes - mass deportations now' would have not just been career ending but would've sunk the whole party

Blue Moon Aurora

I was talking to someone about previous Solar Cycles, and it reminded me of this night from 2015.
A full moon rose and completely washed out the reds and greens of the aurora with the bright blue of a daytime sky, while streetlights colour the waves.

Politicians wringing their hands over why teachers are leaving the profession. The truth is, we'd get more people staying in teaching if our various Governments understood that the real purpose of education is *not* to build a compliant workforce, but a society of well-rounded individuals...

Writing Tip:
Don't fall into the 'I always feel like I need to write right now' trap. That's not a healthy mindset. Don't punish yourself whenever you aren't writing. You have a real life with real responsibilities. Write when you can. Have a healthy work/life balance.

Regarding Reiner, I have known a lot of musicians and been in bands myself. I can’t overstate the importance of This Is Spinal Tap in adjusting the self-importance of musicians. Everyone knows the movie, everyone has identified Spinal Tap moments, everyone is humbler and funnier as a result.

Rob Reiner either made your favorite movie, or made somebody you know’s favorite movie. If you’re a Californian, he’s also part of the reason you or your friends can get married. He has changed more lives for the better than this asshole commenting on him ever did.

As an exercise, take a historical event from your fictional world and write a paragraph about it. Then, write that again, but from the perspective of a character with a strong opinion on it. Then another character with a different opinion. What changes?

A character failing is not necessarily a sign of weakness. We all fail in our lives. But those can be learning experiences. A failure can help a character change and grow. Some of the greatest characters out there are great because of their failures.

Rob Reiner: I'm going to make a coming of age drama, a fantasy adventure story, a romantic comedy, a psychological horror and then a courtroom drama.

Us: Across your entire career?

Reiner: In a 6 year period.

Us: That sounds-

Reiner: -Each one will be arguably the best movie in that genre.

Rob Reiner was the director that first got me to start thinking about how important directors are. Princess Bride and Stand by me are two very different yet formative movies I know all the words to. And my whole family quotes spinal tap to each other.

This one hurts.

Rob Reiner was a good guy. He made a lot of movies about good guys, in worlds where not everyone was good and you didn’t have to be good. He made movies about people trying. He was angry, as many hopeful people are. He knew the world could be better and he wanted it to be. His death is devastating.
