When I'm asked what kind of friend groups I have:

dismaying how devs can present an incredibly well thought out proposal for a reasonable feature, so much more privacy protecting than mainstream competitors, and the widespread reaction is literally ‘why are you working on social features for social media?? 🤬🤬’
"Find friends by phone" is a common tool in social networks. We're proposing a secure scheme and requesting comments from the dev community.

Goals:
・Double opt-in: you're not findable by your phone unless YOU use the tool
・Secure to enumeration attacks
・Resistant to decryption if compromised
Request For Comments: A secure contact import scheme for social networks | Bluesky
This article outlines plans for a future Bluesky feature \- it doesn’t exist yet\! By sharing our ideas early, we hope to solicit feedback from the community.

privacy activists should start telling people that storing data in unencrypted form in the cloud lets AI read it and train on it, maybe that will finally get people to care

same with non-E2EE messages

I think I prefer this conceptually as a long term solution. It makes sense that even if data storage decentralisation is solved, efficient compute or auth becomes a (re-)centralisation driver. I like the idea that you can ‘install’ compute capacities on your PDS like apps
ex. you upload a wasm blob and send a `atproto-middleware: bafk.........` header. service proxying happens as usual but the wasm blob can augment the response with queries from the PDS

“Ethical licensing is hard, but far from impossible. While we cannot easily encode anti-fascism into our licenses, what we can easily do is discriminate against big capital, the underlying engine of fascism and authoritarianism.”

So proud to be working with this legend
Anti-fascistic software is made possible by pro-labor licensing.

I've been trying to write this piece for years. Every time I get started I'm just overwhelmed with paralyzing visions of the FOSS commentariat accusing me of WrongThink.

But I'm tired and we urgently need to get our shit together.

We have to talk about open source licensing.

yeah I think ppl can see and feel what Marx calls ‘deskilling’ being imposed on a mass scale and the suddenness and one-sidedness of this imposition feels alienating and disempowering

people work hard for and identify with their skills, it makes so much sense to be like wdym that’s unvalued now
I think a lot of dislike of AI is basically a justified suspicion that something of this sort is happening.

But since no one wants to admit their real fear quite that bluntly, we get a succession of goofy stalking horses like “AI makes teens suicidal” or “it uses too much water.”

I dont disagree with all these points, but tbh the marginal theory of value can only be ‘obviously correct’ and the labour theory of value wrong, if you don’t have to work to survive (or imagine that you don’t)
Hammered out some thoughts on why I was motivated to post a lot about data centers: the popular conversation about them has been disproportionately informed by very low-trust intuitions I think are bad andymasley.substack.com/p/data-cente...

knowledge, context, detail will *always* live at edges. An architecture that ignores this, and assumes a singular organization (or "agent" lmao) can "figure it out" is gonna get its ass kicked

Deeply need to go here next time I’m in Barcelona
Visited a recreation of Cybersyn — the Chilean socialist internet that predates the web. It had programs to communicate with a decentralized network of telex machines at factories (Cybernet), economic simulators (CHECO & Cyberstride), and this control room
Goal was to control the economy with clicks

Also the people who make such statements publicly don't actually know what anyone cares about. They only know what they care about and are projecting onto others.
"normies do not care about this thing and so it is no use raising a stink" is imho just an excuse for not doing politics, which is the job of making normies care about something

coop bluesky now
Bluesky has rapidly grown to a $1.05 billion valuation while promising "no ads." But VCs expect returns within a few years. Rejecting surveillance capitalism and returning profits to investors—can these coexist?
