i mean if you create an intellectual work (i.e. a novel) as part of your work in a corporation - the corporation owns the right to determine how that novel is used (copyright)

Copyright should not extend to companies. If they want to copyright a thing they should find a guy to hold said copyright. Copyright should also only extend until the death of the holder, whether natural or not. If you hold a copyright anyone should be allowed to hunt you for sport

it would be a different story if i were paying them for the model but i'm not, i'm just downloading a file and running it on my hardware
so the best thing i can do here is making sure i don't do more harm myself and take care to use the model in transformative ways and not as a plagiarism machine

i think that the people training the LLMs should absolutely do better and disclose where the training data comes from, but i also know that me using/not using a particular open-weight model makes absolutely no difference to the companies building them, so my choice here doesn't make a difference

the reason i'm using minimax is because there is no open-dataset model of this size and performance class at the moment but if there were - i would definitely be using that, even if it had slightly worse performance than the closed-dataset equivalent

personally i'm fine with using a model without its training dataset being public because of my views on the whole intellectual property system and how it is fundamentally broken but you don't have to, it's completely fine to have individual boundaries on acceptable use of a technology imo
