25 years ago today, SCOTUS elected George W Bush president of the United States by blocking completion of a voting canvass in Florida. A subsequent canvass by the Associated Press showed that Bush's rival, Al Gore, had won the race in Florida—and thus the contest for the presidency—by 700 votes.

BRING ON THE YULE LADS
Tonight Stekkjastaur, the first of Iceland's 13 Yule Lads, comes down from the mountains. He likes to sneak into the sheep shed to drink milk from the ewes.

All the children put a shoe in the window for him to put a treat or a little gift in – if they have been good! The bad children get a potato.

If I were a celebrity chef, one thing I'd do is leave a knife and cutting board in the kitchen that I used solely for hot dogs and my dog's medication. I would not mark this in any way and fly into a rage at new employees if they used it—a terrifying rite of passage. I would also do lots of cocaine.

Stopping data centers is anti-fascist activism. You heard it from me; now go and spread the good word. We can and must stop them or slow them from being built.

Love that this event dedicated to a global sport, with tons of players and stars who don't speak English, does not appear to have anyone translating for people at home

If you're not watching the World Cup final draw right now, you're missing some truly shambolic television. Just profoundly humiliating for the United States. And for soccer. Also for whoever is doing the lighting inside the Kennedy Center.

My sister and I got our dad a subscription for his birthday. We grew up on the free copies he and my mom would bring home. Times change, but our house still has The Onion.
Here's a note I sent to our members about what we did with their money, and why we expect the Onion to outgrow the Washington Post.

We keep doing weird, hard shit — taunting ICE, yelling at Congress for not taunting ICE, buying bad websites — when nobody else does.

Our members keep getting papers.
