Not that I think someone needs a degree in history to have a command of historical methodology, but more to the point that history is an action you do and if I’m not actively doing the legwork it feels like stolen valor lol

Exactly, I have a degree in it and I teach it and still call myself an amateur/aspiring/etc historian or say “I do X research” because I know I’m not at that level of experience yet.
