I have many normal thoughts and feelings and parasocial friendships with ghosts. 5'11" Lestat truther. The most terrifying kind of preternatural monster: a person who liked Blood Canticle. (she/her)
I remember distinctly going from being immersed in what is a very emotional scene to being pulled out of the book and fully back into my head, like, what the fuck was that?

Spoilers for the book Sunrise on the Reaping, I had to go find the actual title drop to make sure I hadn't hallucinated it. Like, for the love of god-

"You are the real monster Victor" ass title drop. I also hated that line in Frankenstein.

And I want it to not have a stupid title drop, I am still so annoyed about the title drop in Sunrise on the Reaping 🤣 it was so stupid.

I'll still pre-order the Finnick book if she writes it, which she should, and she should feel comfortable flexing the discomfort of everything going on there and going as far as she wants with it, because she's capable of writing it as long as she doesn't pull back! I want to read it!

District 13 and the things that happen after Haymich's games are really rich interesting ideas, and I actually kind of feel like she's not fully confident writing them. I kind of appreciated Ballad for just lacking that kind of self-consciousness and being insane in ways I wish other books were.

She is more comfortable writing about sympathetic characters fighting against outside forces, but her world building, which is also good, requires a more complex narrative and you can sometimes tell that she doesn't feel entirely comfortable writing that even when she has good ideas, Re. Sunrise.

I think my biggest actual critique of Suzanne Collins is that I actually love how dark her world building for the Capitol/Panem goes, but I think she has a really hard time incorporating it into her main narratives, which is why things like Mockingjay tend to be really flawed.

Honestly, I liked most of the book, I think the stupid title drop was just so bad that it made the whole book worse to me in retrospect 😅 I actually liked Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but also I've read a lot of Hunger Games fic, and the prequels are very fanficy to me. Sunrise less so but still.

The Miss USA pageant org, even for a measure of pageants, has a pretty awful history (especially considering who used to own it....) but I do enjoy seeing what nonsense they do each year for National Costume.

AND THE INSANITY I WAS WAITING FOR, USA ! I'm not giving her more pictures because she's my country, she gets more because of the reveal and because she made the eagles kiss (GAY)

Miss Estonia, in an outfit which I can't decide whether it is camp or just amazing, and is therefore better in both ways!

Miss Côte d'Ivoire- OH MY GOD sorry I'm lost in the national costumes now

Let's just say in 1984 a woman was in the process of writing two very different books and her editor told her to scrap one of them, and it wasn't Exit to Eden.

For me that's a lot of the gift of this series, going along with the ride of how the characters actually experience and feel these wild or extreme things, and applying that to how I understand how I experience and feel things! But I know that's not the only way to read it, that's just mine.
November 21, 2025 at 12:29 AM
Because of that, for me, how the characters feel about a thing is always the most important part of how I interpret it, because to me the emotional responses (conflicted as they often are) really are what the story is! Because of that I associate his mom much more with neglect and abandonment.

For me (kind of in general) a lot of the most morally dark stuff in the series is an extreme situation to respond to, to represent the emotional feeling of a much less outwardly emotional situation. So the morality of the events is less of a thing to me than the emotions they create for characters.
