“By all accounts, constitutional tax and expenditure limits have failed to substantially reduce overall volumes of public spending. What they have succeeded in doing is significantly transforming how public spending is financed and what public money is allocated to.”

Fascinating observation from Melinda Cooper’s “Counterrevolution”, which is brilliant.

After the 1970s, CA lowered property taxes to the level of the southern states, supplementing with regressive revenue sources. Note that this is the political economy that leads to Silicon Valley as we know it.

Markets so rational and self-regulating they won’t pay people to teach that markets are rational and self-regulating

Seriously, though, this sucks for a lot of people. Hopefully it leads some to question neoclassicism and take another look at national job guarantee proposals

a quarter of humanity doesn't have access to clean drinking water, but within 2 years we'll be spending more freshwater on cooling down computers that make pictures of big-booby anime girls than the entire country of Denmark consumes to survive.

"Corruption" isn't a legal term of art. It's a framework for thinking about how and why people abuse power. You don't charge someone with "corruption," you charge them with racketeering, fraud, bribery, false statements, etc.

Accuracy and fairness matters. Regardless of what social media wants.

First they came for the immigrants, and I did not speak up, because the latest Rasmussen poll showed low net favorability ratings on immigrants and that gulags are a toss-up issue for suburban moms. #savvy #clever #wonk #nobeliefs #noprinciples

Apparently the U.S. government keeps the Chaos Emeralds at the Federal Reserve. This raises the question of whether Jay Powell turns into Super Powell if he collects 100 rings. Critical implications for monetary policy.
