If you think you're having a bad day: I just emailed someone to congratulate them with publishing a cool paper on a niche topic they've been working on for years, only to realize moments later that the paper was actually by someone with the same first name but different last name.

For those of you keeping score at home: that is now 3 times Helthjem as attempted to deliver the same package to me, forgetting to actually bring it along each time.

Mail delivery in Norway and Sweden is truly comically bad.

✨ New preprint ✨ What if we could watch AND control thousands of individual neurons in behaving mice—with stable access over months? 🧠⚡ Our work introduces transgenic all-optical tools that make this possible - and a resulting surprising discovery! 🔭💡

Apropos of nothing, what is the mood regarding 🧠 #SfN this year? Are people choosing not to travel to the USA? Or are we expecting little change from last year?

Finally figured out why this lick-port circuit was not working: some absolute idiot mixed up the orientation of a relay on the schematic!

For anyone wondering: if you need to send a bunch of analog signals around a setup, you can totally misuse ethernet for an easy plug-and-play connection.

I've somehow managed to already use all 8 wires for this one, so please, nobody give me any more experiment ideas.

Also, do you *really* need 50+ pages of details for that initial selection? Is it *really* going to come down to which of the candidates wrote a better lab-leadership philosophy statement, just for that first round?

Anyone outside academia would consider our hiring process to be completely bonkers.
The academic job market is doing something very good:

A lot of searches are *NO* longer asking for reference letters until applicants make the short list.

This makes is easier to apply for jobs, reduces the letter writing load for faculty, and makes the review process easier for committee members.
Dear academics

We could dramatically reduce our administrative workload if we all just agreed not to ask for reference letters until we made our list of finalists.

This is massive collective action problem has already been solved by…

*checks notes*

…every other industry on earth.

Open Sesame!

The ELT doors have moved for the first time. This was no small feat, as each door will weigh 650 tonnes once completed.

The ELT dome & its doors will guard the telescope from the harsh conditions of the Atacama Desert.
