One of my all-time faves
Evolution is more like a tinkerer than an engineer. New things happen not by perfect engineering but by working with what's already available and repurposing existing objects through recombinations and modifications. This is a classic lesson for any kind of innovation, including that of new ideas..

Not sure if they tested cooperative bindings of TFs, which might have been the key player for determining their activator/repressive roles. Also, it might not be feasible to test in Yeast system for all TFs. Great study, anyways.
The "Low overlap of transcription factor DNA binding and regulatory targets" paper shows our dual futility conjecture identified in humans applies in yeast too—for many transcription factors, most of their locations do not match the transcription factor motif. 🖥️🧬 www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Just dropped our Mobile DNA review on HERVH, an ancient retrovirus now repurposed to build and defend the early human embryo. Call it genomic up-cycling!
I felt HERVH went unnoticed this year, so we published this as a refresher; two fresh data papers - coming soon.
