I suppose they will all want dignity.
Quality tags on today's post by @sabs.bsky.social about the War on Protein. Stuff like this is one of *many* reasons Defector is a very good web site.

"I suppose they will all want dignity," is a line from Slaughterhouse Five that I think about a lot, especially these days. I hope I never stop thinking about it and how to live it.

The aftermath. The fountaining stopped right when we were having dinner. About 9.5 hour total. Such a great day!

We put in a full 8 hour shift at the volcano. Well worth it to see the changes through the day. As much as I like having some space to myself in National Parks, I love seeing families sharing in the wonder.

Great day. Hoping for some night shots, but if not, I'm a happy geo.

We've been waiting for this fountaining event since we got here last Tuesday. Something that has added to my enjoyment is keeping an eye on the USGS monitoring data. The tiltmerer is a big one. This chart shows the change in the tilt of the caldera over the past week. Spot the onset of episode 40.

Absolutely bonkers.
WH sources say Venezuela's opposition leader committed the "ultimate sin": She accepted the Nobel Peace prize.

“If she had turned it down and said, ‘I can’t accept it because it’s Donald Trump’s,’ she’d be the president of Venezuela today,” one said.

I'm trying to write through some anxiety, and I came up with a good metaphor for how life feels sometimes:

I feel like I can't move forward until I take a deep breath, get set, and hear the starting gun. It never works; I'm already in the middle of the race. And it's not a race like that, anyway.

Now, more than ever.
I gotta say, I don’t like the looks of this latest batch of data we’re getting from the American Experiment.

Now that I’ve spent a few months with it, I have to say that every single day I run into something about Liquid Glass that bugs me. It‘s not great.

A word of caution about new year's goals:

Make sure your goals are specific. For example, if your goal is "drink more water", without reference to some baseline, you'll have to increase your water consumption each day until every moment is filled with hydration, leaving no time for other hobbies.

I finally finished s1 of Pluribus, and I'm not sure if I like it. Rhea Seahorn is great and the world they've built is interesting. But I find the whole thing very unsettling. This would be fine, except it's a TV show not a movie; eight hours is too long to feel this way because of a show I watched.

OK Computer is a very good album.

I've listened to it a couple times on this drive across Nevada, and it feels very timely to me. The first "movement" feels like everything is about to fall apart. By the end, there's acceptance, if not resolution.
