This is why I bang on about the necessity to look beyond Farage's past if we are to turn the tide around

Far-right politics and moral panics are mainstream

Anything short of seriously looking at the role of the mainstream in mainstreaming is just pretending to care to make one feel better
So the Home Office, which is responsible for the welfare of asylum seekers & for determining their claims, has decided to call them “illegal migrants” & tell everyone it’s “furious” about them being here, but I’m sure this is fine and not a symptom of a culture of disbelief & gratuitous cruelty

Focusing on extreme events such as the reports of Farage’s teenage past can exceptionalise the nature of far-right politics and make it harder to call out

Some thoughts @theconversation.com on the mainstreaming of far-right politics

Nigel Farage’s alleged teenage comments are a distraction from the damage of his politics
Reports of such appalling behaviour – and Farage’s reaction – give us an insight into the leader of the UK’s rising far-right party.

For over 150 years, trans people have used courts to change legal sex. While writing Before Gender, I found what may be the first case in the US: a formerly enslaved trans woman in Georgia in 1869. Her story shows that trans people found legal support long before the word transgender even existed.
