On Tuesday, Trump said:
"'TRUMP WASN'T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT, according to Pollsters"

He seems to admit that voters are blaming the GOP for the government shutdown, and yet...

Well...when you put it like that...
A typical European car is parked 92% of the time. It spends 1/5th of its driving time looking for parking. Its 5 seats only move 1.5 people. 86% of its fuel never reaches the wheels, and most of the energy that does, moves the car, not the people.

Sound efficient?

Apropos of tomorrow's election in NYC, I wonder if @thirdway.bsky.social stands by the Mamdani hit piece they published in June. Do they still think Cuomo is the safer bet? www.thirdway.org/memo/the-rad...

My local grocery store (in Sweden) has an American section in the foreign foods aisle. It is 90% junk food.

(It's the only place I have found canned pumpkin though)

My building on campus has a rooftop solar array and a monitor showing real-time stats on its electricity generation. Sometimes it is...less than impressive 😂

Yes, the 460 m2 solar array will produce enough electricity over 8 hours today to charge *one* mobile phone or power 15 LED lamps.

A lot has been written on the energy (and climate!) implications of air-conditioning, but I thought this piece in the Silver Bulletin has some great insights on how differently we treat heating and cooling from a policy perspective www.natesilver.net/p/i-loved-my...
I loved my time in the UK. But it needs an AC intervention.
A stiff upper lip and a warming climate make for a strange combination.

As a recently expatriated American, I woke up today to amazing photos of huge crowds across the U.S. (and world!) protesting, and it made me feel hope for the first time in a long time.

We’re on a spot price electricity plan in Sweden, which is great because I finally got my husband to geek out over energy prices. Now he says stuff like, ”It’s going to be really windy tomorrow, we should do laundry.”

🚨New nuclear tech alert! So proud of the DISA and Pillsbury teams for getting this license. This game changing process will revolutionize the ability to treat over 15,000 abandoned uranium mining sites in the west including many on the lands of the Navajo Nation. www.pillsburylaw.com/en/news-and-...

Across the western U.S., more than 15,000 Cold War–era abandoned uranium mine waste sites remain—many of which are located on or near tribal lands—posing long-standing environmental and health risks. ...

So, I think everyone in my social feeds was rightfully mocking the tylenol-autism link, without really grasping that it's the exact same kind of poorly-designed studies behind a lot of the links they do still believe. It may not have the same harms, because tylenol is a harm reduction tool, but...
If you think high-fructose corn syrup is worse than sugar, or artificial sweeteners are harmful, or genetically modified foods are bad for you, or organic vegetables are better for you, you're engaging in the same kind of evidence-blindness that RFK Jr. is.

Not at the same scale! But same idea.

Ugh, this is the worst. When we moved to Europe I thought we would take trains everywhere (and we do try to!), but for work trips it is often 2-3x the cost and takes 5-6x longer. The extra time is not so bad on vacation, but for a family of four that cost is tough to bear
😢 How are flights so much cheaper than trains?
Indeed, why are we forced to pick between cheap & polluting and expensive & sustainable?

Well @greenpeace.eu has the answer: subsidies and MASSIVE tax breaks.

Wow! That trend is shocking, especially Finland. Is it also an issue with people using more wood for heating to offset high energy prices, or is this mostly an industrial harvesting issue?
The drop in CO2 uptake on land (LULUCF) in Finland and Sweden isn't without political consequence.

Finland and Sweden now asking the EU for more flexibility. Norway has also made similar comments (but is not an EU member country).

I had a friend in grad school get whooping cough (she was vaccinated), and she said the *first 100 days* were the hardest.
About this Florida vaccine story:

When they were little - 1 yr and 3 1/2 - my two older boys, who’d had all their shots, got whooping cough.

We asked their pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated.

“Oh, they’d have died.”
